What should we do to get a part-time job on campus?

As part of my financial aid, I have some money under "work study" but I'm not sure how this is supposed to work. could any current students or class of 2014 students let me know how and when I am supposed to get a part time job? also, which jobs should be avoided? thank you

Try this:

https://stanford-csm.symplicity.com/students/

It’s a site called Cardinal Careers. I have already applied to several jobs. I think I already have one.

So it’s our job to go there and find a job if we were assigned to a work-study program? I thought Stanford would automatically assign us a job…

Yes, you need to find your own job. My D found the job search a bit difficult, having had no previous work experience. She ended up getting a referral from a friend and has a really good part-time job. She advises going to the Career Center if you can’t find a job on your own. Many of her friends paid the work study piece from their summer savings. That is not always an option for everyone. Wasn’t for her. She will be a RCC this year and is keeping her job from first year (it was too good to let go of.)

You have to find your own job - work study is optional.

Did you guys have to wait up to two days for account registration to be recognized by the system?

I am fairly certain I had my account in just a couple of hours.

OK it looks like for cardinal careers, they want us to upload a resume? since I haven’t started college yet, what would my resume look like? I don’t think they want my high school credentials and its not like I can say what my major is or anything yet.

edit: nevermind

Well, a resume just includes work experience, your skills, and your education. I didn’t put anything about my major or Stanford (then again I have four years of work experience). I had work experience on mine, but if you don’t have work experience, you just put anything relevant to the job to which you are applying - so computer classes, volunteer hours, etc. You don’t have to upload a resume to browse for jobs, but no matter how you look for jobs, you are going to need a resume. If you PM me with your email address I can send you mine.

so for the mechanics of the career center thing, I upload my resume and then click apply on the job listing that I want? if some request a cover letter, will it automatically send that too?

Xargon, did you already get a confirmation from CDC? I activated my account two days ago on the 28th but still have not received a password.

All the jobs I applied to requested a cover letter and I never sent one. Then again, to be honest, I’m not sure what purpose a cover letter serves.

Ok I looked it up and I’m pretty sure that is where you describe how you are specifically qualified for that job
@ tomjones- it took a day or two for mine to activate. just check your stanford email and it should come soon

@tomjones: i did mine on saturday and i still haven’t gotten an email :

Cardinal Careers didn’t do much for me as a freshman. For public service-minded people, check out the Haas Center. I made $11.80/hour reading, playing, doing arts and crafts, singing, and whatnot with preschoolers in East Palo Alto through the Haas Center. The organization I worked for is something that most students simply volunteer for, but if you’re eligible for work study you can be paid. I don’t consider it work, though. It’s really fun and rewarding.

Other places freshman have worked - Fraiche (Frozen yogurt shop - so good), the Dining Hall (they hire frosh ambassadors at the beginning of the year), Libraries, Tour Guide (crazy but incredible group of people), Hoover Tower, Stanford Student Store, Tutoring organizations, Stanford Student Enterprises, The Stanford Daily (the newspaper). A lot of this isn’t on Cardinal Careers so if you’re still job-less by the time school starts, don’t worry, just keep looking.

thanks 3rd planet, very helpful. An issue is that I don’t qualify for Federal Work Study- I just need a part time job on-campus. it seems like most/ a lot of the postings on cardinal careers are work study only

Have others received their emails? I also did it on Saturday and I’m still waiting on an email.

good luck with your search xargon. it will be a lot easier once school starts because there will be a lot of flyers posted around campus, and many organizations will come to your house meetings to advertise their available positions.
in the meantine, these are some places that don’t require work study employees (most mentioned in my last post):

F4ed (tutoring)
Fraiche
Stanford Student Enterprises
Lifeguard at the on campus pool
Tour Guide
Jamba Juice
Stanford Daily
Campus groups like Flix
Webmasters for campus groups
Assistants in research/academic pursuit of some sort (usually upperclassmen fill these positions)
Dorm Staff (for upperclassmen, but definitely consider it for the future because it pays quite well and is a great character and skill building job, good for resumes too)
TAs (again, upperclassmen)

Participate in Psych Studies. It’s not a steady job but an easy way to make some extra cash. $10-20 in 20 to 45 minutes.

Nice, thanks for these examples. I also have not received my password yet (signed up on Saturday)…
