What songs seemed overdone at auditions this year?

Wow and we thought Lost in the Brass was so obscure when she and her coach chose it last year! Of course, it didn’t stop her from getting into a great program that she loves. So I guess that goes to show that even overdone songs can get you there if you really connect to them.

Hey, this thread was at the top of the “latest posts” so I saw it, and while I don’t have anyone auditioning as long as II know this thread exists, can I ask a question? I see lots of songs mentioned here but none are “Burn” or “Wait for It,” other big solos from Hamilton. I’d have thought that everyone would be singing songs from Hamilton this year?

PS just curious!

@JenJenJenJen - there is a general rule of thumb that you don’t sing anything currently on Bway. (Unless you are better than the person on bway) and the kids who are auditioning for college programs would know that

Oh, thank you – now I’ve learned something today.

thanks @VoiceTeacher I assume you mean a person should NOT be doing “Everything I Know” if they are white? How about if you are mixed, but look white, except for dark hair and eyes? Where is “When It All Comes Down” from? I know a local girl last year was preparing “When It All Falls Down” from Chaplin, but a cursory google search on “When It All Comes Down” only shows a song by BB King, but no musicals on the first page of my search results? (It was not a thorough search, so I likely missed it, but wanted to make sure)

I wonder - did I hear lots of girls singing songs from Hairspray at unifieds, or was it just the same girl in many rooms? I may never know…

Seems like Hairspray songs would be on no-sing lists! And my D is a senior now and also sang Lost in the Brass when she was auditioning in 2013. The show was still new then, so a lot of people had never heard it. How things change!!!

@NewJeffCT - There has been a big shift recently towards being more conscientious about white performers singing songs intended to be performed by ethnic performers. I don’t have a good answer to your question about being mixed but looking white. Its just something to consider. Referring to Chaplin “When it all falls down”

Thanks Voice Teacher. That girl that did “When It All Falls Down” last year is a phenomenal singer, so hopefully it did not matter for her and/or it was not overused last year. If I run into her mom again, I’ll have to ask where she ended up going to college.

As has often been said, if it is not on a school’s “Do Not Sing” list, and you can slay it, sing it! But be careful of those songs linked to a specific performer. If you sing those, you will be compared to her/him (ie - Barbra Streisand and “People”/“Don’t Rain on My Parade” or Sutton Foster and “Astonishing”)

@NewJeffCT regarding the ethnicity thing, specifically as it applies to Everything I Know–I had a student a couple of years ago who sang the stuffing out of it and who was a white-appearing Latina. She got so many passive-aggressive questions about the reason she was singing it (from auditioners who didn’t know her heritage) that we decided to dump it.
