What to Bring

Does anyone know if there is a suggested list of what to pack for freshmen? I remember when I went off the UNC Chapel Hill (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth), they sent a list of suggested items for the dorm room.

I know I am early even thinking about this but I like to get things done early and I don't want to wait until the summer. DS thinks I am completely neurotic for even worrying about things like this yet.

This is something i found just by googling the topic. Not sure if it helps but seemed pretty decent???

[The Tulane University Freshman Checklist](The Tulane University Freshman Checklist)

Wuhandrummer - thank you! This is perfect.

That’s a pretty good list. A little dated in talking about a PDA organizer I think, but otherwise seems very complete. I thought they had left out rain boots, but it is under the umbrella header. The only other thing I can think of is if your child is into working out, they will need to pack the appropriate clothes for Reilly. It is a very nice facility with all the kinds of equipment a Gold’s Gym would have. Plus the pool, which they do mention. Also if they play tennis or any other sport that requires equipment, don’t let them forget that.

My pleasure. It is definitely out dated but best I found.

From Jeff Schiffman’s admissions blog:
[Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff: Top 10 Tulane Packing List for Freshman](Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff Schiffman: Top 10 Tulane Packing List for Freshman)

Those two lists together definitely seem complete!

Quick note: bring a surge protector, not an extension cord! One, a surge protector will protect everything you plug into it if the outlet gets wet (a bunch of outlets got wet this year during Isaac) and extension cords are not allowed in the rest halls.

A lot of people are into sperrys down here, could be a nice Christmas present.

Hi SnOflake, I’m with you on shopping early…
Here are some dorm room suggestions that I couldn’t find on those lists:
My son really like having a small bedside table (from Bed bath and Beyond). It allowed him to put his phone (which he used as an alarm) next to his head. He also used hanging shelves, Butler only had one chest for two residents and his roommate used that.
He also uses microwavable plates and cups and he swims a lot, so I sent him with a water proof second back pack.
Good luck with shopping.

Here’s a list of random things I would have never thought to bring but actually are pretty necessary:
Bring more hangers than you can imagine. Tulane sells them cheap but it’s nice to have enough to begin with.

For laundry detergent get the Tide pods– just throw one in and your solid. Also don’t forget dryer sheets.

Plastic silverware will come in handy.

Trash can liners. Maybe that’s just something I forgot but they’re useful, obviously.

Ethernet cable. The wifi at Tulane is terrible, but the wired internet is pretty good.

ok. so here is my question…how much do you buy at home (we live in nj) and ship down to tulane and how much do you buy in NOLA? DS1 attends a northeastern college, 4 hr drive away, so before freshman year, I bought everything (comforter, sheets, shelves, desk lamp, toiletries, towels etc, etc, even notebooks and paper clips!
this whole flying to another state thing is really foreign to me. how does the move in process work? do people ship giant boxes, or do you go on a massive bed bath beyond/target shopping spree during move in.
being the neurotic mom that i am, i would love to start shopping now and be 100% prepared before DS2 leaves in august, but that doesn’t seem like it’s going to be the best strategy. thoughts???

If you go to your local Bed, Bath, and Beyond, you can scan all of the products you want and tell them where and when you want everything (so pick the BB&B in Metarie) and they will make sure it’s all ready for you to pick up. That way you can get the actual shopping done at your leisure and just worry about pickup when you get done here.

We were able to bring down a lot of items in big suitcases and duffles on Southwest with our two free bags each. I was rather proud of my packing, but my husband thought it was a huge hassle dragging the stuff through the airport. We also picked up stuff in Metairie.

I’ve already started thinking about what to bring too… And to whoever said trash can liners… do the dorms come with trash cans and if yes, are liners not provided? I’m in the same boat as jozuko. My brother went to an instate school and so no one in my family has dealt with an out-of-state move-in process before. But I was thinking about shipping the bedding, towels, and other basic shippable (is that a word?) items. There’s really nothing heavy to bring except a tv if I wanted to, which I probably won’t. I read somewhere that laundry is now free and each room as a microfridge now. If anyone can corroborate this, that would be great! So I’m probably going to end up shipping most of the stuff and just bringing my clothes with me and buying the toiletries when I get there.

I can confirm the “free” laundry but don’t know about the microfridges. Quoted because you still pay for it, it’s just in your student fees.

Microfridges are free in every dorm this year. Wastebaskets are not provided. Also the first week of school one night Target in Metarie stays open until midnight just for Tulane students and they bus the freshmen there so you can buy anything you need.

I highly recommend using Bed, Bath and Beyond instead of shipping everything unless you just really have your heart set on something you can’t get there. Shipping can get very expensive and you will probably want to ship a lot of other things that you already own. They will have your chosen items all packed and ready for pick up at the Bed Bath and Beyond in Metairie when you arrive in New Orleans. Make sure you have any textbooks that you purchase shipped to your mailbox if you buy them from somewhere other than the Tulane Bookstore. You will receive detailed instructions for shipping along with the information that includes your new address! Read and follow those very carefully.

Just to elaborate a bit on kreativekat’s last statement, there is a very organized regimen that is done every year regarding shipping. Tulane sends a packet that, as kreative says, tells you exactly how to address anything being sent to the student at Tulane. There is (I guess there still is) an actual US Post Office inside Bruff, the building that has the dining hall and the mailboxes.

But they also give you exact instructions on how to label and ship boxes FedEx that they hold until move-in day. On that Saturday of move-in, FedEx has already lined up 3-4 HUGE trailers, and your stuff is then located and brought out. At that point there are ROTC students that put the boxes on a dolly and take it to the dorm for you.

So between that, BB&B where as stated you can buy at your local store or on-line and have it waiting in Metarie, Target night, and the Tulane Bookstore everything is readily taken care of. In addition, there are two Wal-Marts (at least) within easy driving distance, one just off the downtown area and another not too far into the next parish, Jefferson. Tulane is near the Orleans/Jefferson parish line, I would estimate that Wal-Mart is only about 6 miles.

Finally, Tulane runs shuttles daily to the Wal-Mart downtown along with other locations, and a shuttle on the weekends to the Metarie locations of BB&B, Target, and general mall-type stores.

I am assuming that students store their stuff in storage units over the summer, correct? How does that work?

Yes, many students do. Tulane has a couple of companies they approve, which means they have permission to come into the dorms, pick up everything, store it for the summer, then deliver it to whatever new address you have the next fall, be it a dorm or off-campus. Obviously you can use anyone else you choose, but they won’t have permission to enter the dorms. You would have to get it to their facility yourself.

As you would expect in New Orleans, the storage units are nearly all climate controlled, and I am sure the ones from these companies are. Tulane sends out notices (e-mail I assume, maybe postings in the dorms as well) telling the students how to contact these companies. They do that later in the spring semester, although the housing office could always get the information for a student if there was something that needed to be stored during the semester for some reason.
