bring a really really long ethernet cable. some dorms don't have wifi.

Ethernet Cable
Television (if you watch it)
Cable cable (if you want cable)
Cellphone
Computer (laptop is a must for some disciplines, such as engineering; in that case, a laptop case or suitable bookbag is another good idea, since you will probably need to bring it to class at some point)
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Deodorant
Comb
Soap
Shampoo
Towel
Comb
Clothes
Pillow
Mattress
Water bottles
Sodas (bottles or cans)
Snacks (granola bars, crackers, popcorn... whatever floats your boat; also plastic sporks if your snacks require them)
Bags (for garbage, dirty clothes, etc...)

...yeah, I think that's all I've used so far. Of course, I've only been here a couple of days ^.^ I've got a lot more stuff, but I won't put it down until I find it useful.

I still have a year for this, but...

Do you recommend a full-sized gaming laptop, or a really weak ultraportable and a desktop in the dorm?

To the above poster, I'd do the weak portable and the fine desktop. That's more of a personal preference though, so the question is how often do you use your computer to take notes in class, to study from in a library, or whatever. Since its gaming you're going after, I think that desktop is best to go with since its easier upgradeable and hardware is easier to access than with a laptop. That plus you can get a really big screen for gaming.

actually not a freshman, and calm your bitterness down its not that serious

who's bitter? I just thought you were giving bad advice.

BTW, if you decide to go for the desktop/ultraportable combo, I think the eee pc's might be good choices. The model I think would be a good idea comes with Windows XP, costs $400, has a built in camera, and is available in black and white. There are other models availible, but either they run linux (which I don't think is recommended for school computers, but might be okay if you only use it to take notes) or they get a bit more expensive.

Then there is also intel's 2go pc at $450. Same processor, also comes with Windows XP, also has a built-in camera, and has 40 GB of RAM (as opposed to 4GB the eee pc offers) all for only $50 than the above-mentioned asus. Unfortunately, it is also a bigger machine, so that may take away the "ultraportable" aspect of it. It also only comes in gray.

Now, if you really don't care about your computer being portable and all you want is a cheap laptop to take while your desktop stays in the dorm, perhaps this $400 Toshiba laptop would be a good buy, too.

Ohhhh, I found one more interesting thing in case the laptop doesn't need to have windows. Walmart is selling something called a Cloudbook for $350. It uses linux, is small, has built-in webcam, 30GB hard drive and 512MB RAM.

I agree. Bring your own things unless you have an agreement with your roommate for each of you to bring certain items to avoid crowding. Assuming you will borrow from others may just annoy them. They spent money so that they would have the use of their stuff- not so it would be down the hall in your room until you get around to returning it.

This is what we learned from my son starting at UF this summer:
1. Computer lock to chain laptop to bed rail or desk - when leaving dorm room open and laptop is sitting on desk. Buy this lock before you come to UF as they only had the key type in the bookstore and wanted the combo lock (Best Buy had them)

You do need the XL twin sheets. Would have liked to have found XL mattress topper.

We used these lists to get lots of ideas and selected what we thought he needed. The bookstore now has some room items on clearance - such as desk lamps.

If you want a large 5 x 8 Gator floor rug, order from Lowe's now.

Did end up getting a tv.

A never-ending supply of Gator t-shirts (because that is what everyone seems to wear all the time...)

Many items were picked over in Gainesville - even in the summer. We had much better luck either buying before we arrived or later and shipping.

as for kitchen utensils (smeone asked this earlier) i just finished summer b, and i came up with none. what i ended up buying were 4 plates, bowls, and cups (plastic reusable from target) because disposable is expensive (and not to mention not environmentally friendly!) Also, my roommate had a pot which was good fro making spaghetti and stuff. i also ended up buying a sharp knife which i used a lot.

hope to help!

Disinfectant wipes for the toilet seat. You will be surprised how disgusting teens are.
