What to bring?

Alright, so most of us have our dorm assignments and have Facebooked our roommates, but now we've got all summer to figure out what we need to take up there this fall.

To the upperclassmen: What did you bring that was helpful? What could you have left at home? What did you forget and have to live without for a week before you figured out where to buy it? What flat out just didn't fit in your breadbox of a dorm?

Thanks guys! =)

Do yourself a favor and don't bring a TV. I found very little use for it after maybe the first few months. Honestly, I didn't find much necessary besides clothes/hygiene products/computer/notebooks and stationery to be necessary. By year 3, I was able to be packed up solo in my car within about an hour each time I had to move out.

Since I spent most of my time on campus, here is what I brought up.

[ul]
[]a TV (I had a 14'', but I knew many that had 25" and up. Also flat screens are becoming popular
[]frig - I rented the first year and bought one from walmart because it was more cost effective. I you are not there for summer, you can ask your friends if they want a frig for the summer
[]I never had a printer. I would use the campus ones.
[]stapler
[]3 hole punch
[]a book shelf (a cheap one)
[]2 pillows
[]bed padding (you can go as cheap as the egg crate one to the down ones) I had a egg crate and the thick foam padding and a down comforter
[]pens and pencils (G2 pens and mechanical pencils for me)
[]I did not use loose leaf paper much. It was mostly notebooks and folders t hold my lecture notes.
[]a planner and Google Calander
[]I had a 3.5ft wide dry erase board. Mostly for concept mapping and studying and memorizing chemical structures
[]shampoo, soap, toothbrush, tooth paste, etc
[]shower slippers
[]air freshener
[]broom (the floor gets dirt), I also had a mop......if you want to send the money you can get a swifter
[]alarm clock or use you cell phone
[]storage containers, but everyone doesn't need it
[]I used the microwave in the kitchen/lounge.
[]lamps
[]external hard drive to back up my information
[]USB thumb drive (I have 4GB, but 1 or 2GB would do)
[]iron
[]surge protector
[/ul]

That's all I can think of now.

If you forgot something you can go too Walmart (there is one on Archer and another on 13th going N), Target (Archer), Best Buys (Archer), Loews (Archer), Publix (one of archer and the other on 2nd and 34th), and WinnDixie (corner of 16th and Main St)

This is person dependent, but I used my TV. I had my favorite shows (i.e. Greys Anatomy, ER, The Office, reality shows, among other) that I liked to watch. I had morning shows on when I was getting ready for classes. I also had Netflix, so I need a TV to watch the movies.

You all are awesome. I am now ridiculously worried about college life because that seems like A LOT of stuff to bring. I think I'll print a list out and check off things that I have.

As my dorm isn't apartment style, what kinds of kitchen utensils are really needed? I'm not the type to go spontaneously bake some cookies or actually prepare meals for myself, so I wouldn't need things like that I guess.

Those lists give me a good laugh. If you're in dorms, chances are a) your roommate will have it or b) someone within the hall will have it that you can borrow from.

lol yea my list is ridiculously detailed but hey its got almost everything u need

i was wondering what kind of things we need to get done when we get to gainesville. like opening up a bank account, getting your ID done, finding a job, etc..

I'd say open up a bank account at Wachovia, I saw a few Wachovia ATMs when I went on a campus tour. Open it at any Wachovia branch near your location.

To find a job, get your citizen/resident documentation. You're quite literally an undocumented worker if you don't have your documents.

Buy the 20 dollar memory foam thing from Target. ITS AMAZING. I dont know if an egg crate is just as good but the memory foam is thicker.

I like having a tv cause I have to have background noise on when I am in a room.

Dont forgot the cable to hook the tv up. Idk why I thought the dorms gave you one to use but by the time I got up there all the stores were sold out.

Thats another thing, the stores are CRAZY the first weeks. Try to get as much shopping done at home.

I'll throw in a curveball for my own sake; What if you were flying in by plane, what would you bring via luggage? What would you send in by mail?

I plan on coming to UF by plane, so I'm most likely going to have to buy a ton of stuff.

I suggest either buying your dorm stuff online (linen and things JcPenny, bed, bath, and beyond) and send it to the dorm. Or electronics (best buys, amazon, circuitcity, etc) and ship it. You can also just buy it when you get to gainesville. For you luggage, just bring clothes.

That why I suggest people go to the Walmart on 13th (across from Lowes). Everyone will be going to the one on archer.

don't rely on other people, bring your own things

Yes everyone has to bring EVERYTHING! God forbid you ask someone to borrow scissors or rubbing alcohol when you need those one or two times a semester. The redundancy from everyone bringing their own set of everything is just silly and wasteful. From your post history and courses you are taking, I can tell you're a freshman, but speaking as a grad student I can say that you will get TIRED of having everything because at the end of the semester it's you that has to move all that crap out, and after year 1 (if at all) mom and dad probably aren't going to drive down and help you move out.

There is nothing wrong with borrowing odd things from people that you can only find extremely minimal use for if you're living in a dorm.

1800 Ne 12Th Ave, Gainesville, FL 32641 is a Wal*Mart supercenter.

bring your own stuff as far as things you are gonna need all the time or maybe even more than 3 or 4 times a semester..

as far as those random things, you can def. borrow them from people... youre gonna end up borrowing stuff anyway.. so dont try to get around that by bringing all your own stuff... sometimes its a bonding experience!

:)

actually not a freshman, and calm your bitterness down its not that serious... o and Pink you got the gist of what I was saying

bring a floor lamp, lightbulb, area rug, coaxial cable (if you forget it go to Lowes or Home Depot and get RG6 wire --its better than the kind walmart sell anyway)...I brought a battery backup (it has 6 battery powered and 2 surge) I still ran out of plugs...so may need more extensions and such. that is all I can think of right now...
