I know there is a general “what to bring” list under college life, but is there a list for BC in particular? Or some suggestions from current students ? My son will be living in Newton, and as a Mom I’m wondering about things such as refrigerators, microwaves, carpeting, etc. Thanks in advance!

First Year Information - Boston College
under "What should I bring?"

As far as refrigerators and microwaves, BC provides a rental service to students for the refrigerators and microwaves; however, I dont think it's worth the price mainly because you can buy a mini fridge and a microwave for the same price or even cheaper than the rental price. I've really only seen refrigerators being used to chill drinks and store take out so it may not necessarily be worth the price for a fridge and the same goes for the microwave. As far as carpeting is concerned, there is carpeting in the dorm albeit really bad carpeting material. Other things you should bring or buy around Boston is a fan. Since freshman housing does not have AC, the buildings can get quite hot and humid.

Thanks for the advice, we already have a nice fridge and microwave to bring, I'm a little concerned about the hot and humid dorms, my son is assigned to a basement room at Newton and he has bad allergies to mold, is there a mold problem down in those rooms, I am not sure if he will be able to sleep there? He is bring a fan, but mold is something that is hard to get rid of and we didnt know that BC had basement rooms.

I would call Res Life and ask about the mold. My D lived in Keyes a few years ago and I just remember her room being somewhat dry, but she was not in a basement room. She did have another issue before her freshman year and I called Res Life and the young woman that took the call was very helpful. I would suggest your son call. I called for my daughter and I remember that when they returned the call, the young woman asked to speak to my daughter and straightened out the issue with her, not me.

Do the cafeterias/dining halls have microwaves? I like warm milk with my cereal :D

I lived on Newton this past year and the dining hall on Newton does have a microwave/toaster for you to warm up your meals; however, I'm not entirely sure about McElroy. As for mold, I don't think it'll be an issue because the wall are made of cinder blocks that are painted over; however, if you are still worried, you can always bring a dehumidifier to lower the humidity and consequently mold outbreaks.

Thanks I think he will bring a dehumidifier with him, thats a good idea. How did you like being at Newton, I'm sorry we didn't even get to see it when we were there so we have no idea what its like.

Newton is beautiful and I loved living there. There is actually grass on Newton as opposed to the small patches of grass on Upper. My friends and I played sports all the time on the grass etc. The only thing that can detract from the Newton experience is the winter bus rides and even that can have its special moments. Overall, it's a great place to live and Newton has the best food out of any of the dining halls.
