What types of things do new freshmen need to bring in terms of furniture and stuff? I live in California so it'll be difficult transporting large items so I'd have to plan in advance. Current Princetonians, what kinda stuff should I plan for?

it completely depends on what kind of room you have-- also where your roommates live and how many you have. If your parents are coming with you, there is a target/walmart/linens n things about 5 minutes (by car) from campus, to buy all of the bigger things. But generally what was found useful:

-lights (a lot of the dorms have VERY little light, my ~400sf common room had ONE tiny lightbulb next to the door, very depressing)

-sofa/futon/chair (depending on where youre living-if youre in a plain double there may or may not be enough room)

-TV + dvd player/xbox

-fridge (you can rent one at the beginning of the school year, useful esp if youre coming from cali)

-bookcases/shelves (some dorms have bookshelves as furniture, others dont)

-mirrors (but dont buy ones that hang over a door, that is against fire safety because they think that if you panic and theres something on the back of a door you wont remember where the door is)

umm thats about all of the big things that I can think of now-- but I wouldnt try to bring any of that from california, its much easier to buy in new jersey or work it out with your roommate(s)

The scary thing is, I don't think you're kidding.
