Dorm furniture?

what should incoming freshman bring to their dorm?

I'm pretty much bringing just a fan; besides the obvious clothes and all that stuff.

Any current students have any suggestions?

it all depends on where ur dorming.

suites, dbls, bamm, etc. some have a/c some dont.

bring lots of hangers, laundry stuff, a better chair (their chairs suck) or cushions for it. one of those pillows that u can use as a back thing on the bed. its like a couch/pillow looking thing. a lamp…a tv… maybe? doesnt matter.

dont bring too much stuff or ull be lugging a house back home at the end of the year.

hm, thanks for the heads up.

I’m at Quad 1 on livingston, apparently; ac or no… I’m assuming no…

is there a place for clothes other than the closet?

yeah you have no a/c loll. quads…heh. yeah make sure u bring a fan… preferrabbly the long vertical ones, they work much better.

the furniture they give you are:

desk
chair
bed(no bedding of course)
drawer
and either a closet or a built in closet.

make sure to bring a long ass ethernet cable too… roughly 50ft. dont buy it at best buy or anything. at the convenience stores they sell it for mad cheap in the beginning of the semester.

thanks for that!

why such a long ethernet cord? and there’s no wifi then?

how big is the drawer?

i meant to say dresser. but … same thing? i guess lol. mmm… it has… 5 compartments i think. its medium sized. will fit everything… unless ur a girl idk abt that. might want to bring a plastic container thing just in case. i brought one just for my towels. wifi … is very non existent inside the dorms. however outside of ur dorm and in the lounge their is wifi. u need a long ethernet cord since the plug is only on one side of the room… and u might be on the other side of the room so yeah…

oh and u get a fridge/microwave. forgot about that.

wait, one ethernet jack… two people; how does that go -.-?

couldn’t I just bring a cheap router or something?

No, there are two ethernet jacks. Just one box. And it is on one side of the dorm in most cases.

Whoever lucks out and get the side without the box needs to get a long ethernet cord. Same goes with the TV. You’ll need a splitter and a long cord if you are on the other side of the internet/TV box.

Craig, when did you get your housing assignment? I thought incoming freshman would be notified in August.

It was leaked yesterday on the myRutgers portal under “my tab” –> “Online student directory” –> “address update.”

Even the room numbers were there lol. But now today, all that info has been taken down so it could’ve been wrong :frowning: I guess we have to wait til August now…

Is there a mirror in the dorm room or do you need to bring one?

Also how is the lighting - do you need a desk lamp?

And do you think a rug is necessary?

Most dorms are equipped with mirrors. But the size of the mirror varied. When I lived on Busch in one of the BAMM dorms, I had a mirror, but it was a medium sized vanity one, not those long ones where you can view from head to toe. My sophomore year when I lived in a river dorm on College Avenue, I had one of those head-to-toe mirrors.

The lighting is – meh. I highly suggest you get a desk lamp or floor lamp to lighten up the room. Some dorms come with desk that have lamps attached.

A rug is necessary if you have hard floors. Again, it varies by dorm. Some dorms have carpet and some are tiled. It’s best to get a rug for tiled floors because it gets cold!

So it depends on the dorm you get. I’d hold back on the mirror if you are planning to get one of those full length ones. But a desk lamp and rug can come in handy. :)

Thanks MushaboomBlue. I can always rely on you for answers. I think my son is on College Ave. The housing for freshman occasionally posts on the portal (unofficially) and that’s where he’s listed. Makes sense since that was his first choice and he got his housing form in early.
