So we're heading out next weekend for parents weekend but more importantly, to buy our son some winter clothes. We're from S CA, so he has nothing warmer than a sweatshirt and jeans, and a pair of keds. Any recommendations on where to shop? And besides a warm coat what else should we make sure he has? I'm assuming the keds won't cut it for winter, but what do guys wear, boots?

Oh lord. He’ll need a very warm coat, yes, and boots. He’ll also want a pair of good gloves (the very warm, waterproof kind that still allow you to move your fingers well; lined leather gloves are really nice.) A hat would be a very good idea (something that’s warm and covers the ears) and possibly a scarf if he isn’t afraid that they’re too girly.
Plenty of guys I know wear furry moccasins, but only the hipster sort. If he doesn’t have sweatpants, those would be a good idea, even if he’ll only lounge/sleep in them.

Go to Mall of America to shop. Winter clothes is beginning to show up at many stores. You will need coat, boots, hat, scarf, gloves, under armor, ear muffs, hand warmers, hot coco haha, wind jacket, and anything else to be prepared for MN winter. Btw, I love winter but minus the snow haha. Have fun shopping!

I’m coming from Orlando…this will be my first time ever seeing snow…wow, I’m a bit worried lol

thanks for the useful post!

-scarves - the ones you can wrap around your neck multiple times, not the small useless ones that are just for fashion

-hooded sweatshirts - fleeced preferably

-extra long socks - thicker the better

-if he is a whitey-tighty person, switch to boxer briefs for winter

-for tops it always helps being layered, so like cardigans over button ups over t-shirts or long shirts if he wants to look nice for classes/presentations

-some good old Timberland boots a must

Don’t forget a hat that you can pull down over your ears!

Thanks for all the suggestions. The boot thing was my biggest question. Someone along the way told us that most guys just wear sneakers through the winter, so I was kind of wondering about that. Timberland boots sound like a good idea. This is going to be an expensive trip :)

Yea, I personally just wear sneakers as they pave the roads for pedestrians so it shouldn’t be an issue. However, if you want to play in the snow or have your feet insulated during negative degree weather, then boots are a must. Maybe, just hold off on the boots until winter comes and your son can decide wether boots are needed.

Good luck and welcome to the U of M family!
