What to do if no admittance to med school?

I'm just finishing up my freshman year of college and I'm a little concerned with my GPA. I did exceptionally well first quarter, with a 3.9, but my grades have slipped since. I took an advanced math class my winter quarter along with the hardest chemistry class of the gen chem series, resulting in a drop to a 3.1. This quarter is a balance between the two, averaging at about a 3.6 (thanks to physics...). I know I'm only a freshman and GPA isn't everything that med schools look at, but I was just wondering of any other options for a bio degree in the practical world, just in case it doesn't work out. I really want to be a pediatrician or dermatologist, but I've been thinking about working as a genetic counselor as another job choice. I just want to see what is out there for people with bio degrees outside of med school. :) Thanks!

Possible areas you could enter for grad & professional study (depending on grades, areas of interest, coursework/prerequisites taken in your biology major and supporting areas, etc.): the various bioscience specialties, some agricultural/natural resources specialties, food science, nutrition, history/philosophy of science, bioethics, science journalism, kinesiology, physical therapy, nursing, public health, health policy, medical anthropology, biological/forensic anthropology, forensic science, ergonomics, some areas of psychology, environmental science, environmental policy, law, communication disorders, graduate business, gerontology, human development, science education, occupational therapy, human factors/ergonomics, medical physics/radiologic sciences, optometry, etc.

Biology majors do not have particularly great job prospects, probably because there are so many of them. But you do not have to major in biology to do pre-med.

You can try again and again and many more if you wish
On the other hand, I know one Bio major who landed some financial job that paid for his MBA and he is currently a CFO of some small company. I do not know his reasons for not sticking around medicine, I believe that he took MCAT.

You do whatever you wish…

this helped a lot. thanks!

If med school doesn’t work out, in all honesty, a BIO major is going to be useful as the red stoplights on GTA 4. Yeah you may be able to find a job as a research assistant, but you will be paid crap! You can try different aspects of medicine, like Optometry, Dentistry, or Podiatry, or even go to PA school. A bachelors only will not help you, you should work on your masters and try med school the following year. Keep trying. Or think about DO schools, its easier to get into. And if you REALLY want to become a doc after both fails, you can go to a Carribean med school which aren’t the best at putting people into residency programs lol. Good luck!
