Going to Georgetown tomorrow. What should I ask? Should I drop a visit to the admissions office (if so, how do I do that)? How do I get to talk with one of the professors? Just so you know, Georgetown does large group tours where you can basically show up at any time on the day you’re signed up for. What about for other colleges? Thanks!
Id say the admissions office is an essential stop on any college tour. Just stop by to see the type of people who’ll be evaluating you! Dont forget that tours are a chance for YOU to get a feel of the campus. Try to think less of what you should be asking/doing and more about your own feelings to attending this school for four years.
You could run into a professor or you could email them in advance to set up a meeting, but it would be extremely short notice. Don’t just force arbitrary questions. Ask about what you’re interested in. Ask to see a freshman dorm if that’s not automatic.
This is extremely last minute and unplanned.
- From what I see looking for 2 seconds Gtown has an online system to sign up for a tour an information session so they may not be constantly available . In fact the only one I saw for the day starts at 10AM. Get on that website and sign up now or risk being closed out. Unless you called admissions and checked in advance, I don't think you should assume you will get a tour whenever you want, especially on a holiday weekend.
- I'd also print out a campus map before you go.
- If admissions is open but you can't get on a tour, I"d still stop by and ask if there is some sign-in sheet or form to fill out so they will have in on record that you visited. Also ask for any available literature for prospective students.
-I think it is unrealistic to hope to talk to a professor with no notice, the fact that many professors are not around full time in the summer, and that it is the start of a holiday weekend. This is something that is generally planned in advance.
-In terms of questions, ask anything appropriate that you are interested in that can’t be answered from the school website. We found it best to direct academic/admissions questions to admissions officers at info. sessions and student life questions to student tour guides.
-Most colleges have a online system to sign up for tours/info sessions. Use them.
Yes, I am signed up for the 10 AM session, which I planned about a month ago. The lady on the phone told me that I could essentially show up at any of the information sessions tomorrow though, as long as it was the same day, so that’s what I meant. I’ll try to ask to see the dorms, that is an essential factor for me
I toured Georgetown last year and you don’t get to go inside of the dorms due to safety/security reasons.
You probably won’t get a chance to talk to a professor, either. During the fall and spring semester, Georgetown has certain classes that are open to visitors to sit in on, but not during the summer.
The odds of talking to a professor in your field tomorrow at a moment’s whim are slim. If you really wanted to speak to a faculty member, it would have been more professional to email one and plan a meeting in advance. If you just happen to meet someone nice in the hallway, then kudos. Although tomorrow is the day before the 4th of July. Don’t expect a lot of activity on campus.
