Theres no way I'm gonna be able to do 'research' and get published by a magazine, since I'm just an average student. I doubt I could get into an elite summer program or get an internship in congress, so what can i do that looks good for colleges

get a job.

Even if you can't get the level of internship you want i would still go for one. Eventually after a couple of summers if you establish a good track record with some decent companies you can eventually get the internship you want. Otherwise if you don't do anything you'll probably never have a shot. I would definetly recommend interning over just getting a regular summer job, it will help create a stronger resume.

get a job! and see if there's a day camp you can work at - working with kids = great

job or smaller internship...you def. want to get some spending money for college.

Volunteer - it's what makes the world go round (according to the coaster I received from the hospital I volunteer at ;) )

get nasty at a recruitable sport
