I waited slightly too long to apply to more than one summer internship (which didn't work out), so I'm now looking at several others (and jobs in retail). What do I do in the hopeful event that I get more than one callback, or if I decide not to go the intern/working stiff route? How would I tactfully tell the company I don't want to work for that I don't want the job anymore?

The internship organization should contact you with their offer and then give you a certain amount of time to accept the offer. They know that you may have other offers out there. They may also ask you to reply fairly quickly if you aren’t interested so that they can make offers to other students that they have waitlisted.

Companies and organizations that hire people are used to this process as it happens all the time. In regular full-time positions, companies sometimes try to sweeten their offer - I don’t think that that happens with internships.
