What To Do!

So, I'm a Junior in high school and this is my college search "Prime Time" and I have no idea what to do or how to even start to look. I'm sure I want to major in English, but whether I want to work in publishing, editing, or teaching. I'm great at writing and reading, but the only college's in my area are mainly for Medical schooling and maybe one or two courses in English. I don't know how to look for a school and what to look for in a school. I know I can change my major once I'm in if I don't like it, but I don't know if I can afford to change! My mind feels like it needs to explode when I think about it...I need some help!

Alright. Well, start by looking around for schools where your stats mean you have a pretty good chance of being accepted. Then build a list of a couple of reaches, matches, and safeties. What’s your GPA and SAT/ACT scores, if you’ve taken them yet?

Another important thing: You need to talk to your parents to see how much you can afford. Will you be applying for financial aid? Are scholarships an important factor?

Thirdly, you can narrow down what schools you list by deciding what you like: Do you think you’d prefer a small, LAC, a medium sized school, or a large university? Do you want to be in a rural, suburban, or urban area? Are sports important? Etc. You can use CC’s Super Match tool to help you look: http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_search/.

You certainly don’t have to know right now exactly what you want to major in. he good news is that pretty much every college has English as a major.

this does not sound right. what colleges are in your area?

Personally, I’ve always felt the money talk should come first so you don’t disappoint yourself in falling in love with the University of Paris, France which you might not be able to afford. Still, the Supersearch on the left side of this page is a great place to start - Also, be aware that the vast majority of kids don’t know what they really want to major in right away - Many will change majors in their first two years of college because you will discover more areas of interest once you start (Not every high school offers classes in Psychology and you might get there and fall in love with it after being in your first class!).

Most of the schools focus on medical engineering (UNC Chapel Hill, ECU, etc.). My family wants me close to home, but most of the school’s I have researched only have English Education courses and I’m looking into majoring in Professional writing. Its more of a medical and education area, no room for creative writing.
