@london203 I did not mean to come across as being critical; that was not my intent. It was more like a raised eyebrow kind of thing.
My apologies @skieurope.
My husband was wearing a baseball cap from his daughter’s BS recently and someone asked, Did you go to that school? And my husband said, No- my money did.
Come on- that was funny!!
Ooh- I am stealing that! PhotographerDad rocks.
No worries @london203
My kids put the school bumper stickers on their laptop (well on the snap on case protecting the laptop) - one college even sent a sticker when accepted that was designated as a “laptop” sticker - not sure if this is in addition to one for the car or instead of - is this the new trend?
Like I said: kids love stickers! My kid’s laptop is covered with them…and they get changed periodically.
My son received a little sticky thingy that went on his phone case. At revisit and move in day we received t shirts and magnets, lights; that sort of stuff. I actually had to go out and buy my bumper sticker. I’m very happy to have it on the back of my beat up minivan!
I strongly suspect that @choatiemom was able to take the comments as they were intended which was (in my opinion) pretty tongue in cheek. If she was offended I apologize but I think @london203 might be reading a bit too much into a joking exchange. And for the record I also have stickers on my laptop. I would mock pretty much anyone who had a harvard sticker on their car 20 years after graduation (or still used their harvard email address, which I’ve also come across) on the other hand I take for granted that people who are obsessed with say Michigan football or something might still be sporting a bumper sticker or a sweatshirt. Call me a hypocrite, I can take it!
I remember someone who was driving the car he got in high school in grad school. He was trying to make the cross country trip from East to West with the car to his faculty job but his car died somewhere in Rockies. He wanted to surprise his high school friends but I guess he failed to do so.
FWIW, we have a SAS sticker on both of our cars. It’s a pretty rare sighting, and has led me to spontaneous conversations with semi-random people over the years.
Still waiting for a Masters Fencing sticker…may have to make one!
I don’t know if we would put our daughters’ college stickers on the cars. I definitely had my college sticker on my college car (my brother’s college too, as we shared the car).
When we went to one of the Emma Willard open houses last year, we parked next to what I now know was @SevenDad’s car. I recognized the SAS sticker and even commented on it, but I’m still bummed that I didn’t connect the dots until much later.
That’s exactly why I put stickers from my kid’s schools (JBS and BS) on my car! I never had stickers from my own college-- never saw the point – but having ones from DS’ schools means people will stop me at the grocery store or wherever and say, “Oh! My kid goes there!” Or, “I used to go there and now I’m in college!” Or “Oh, we’re looking at that school for our kid!” That’s kind of fun.
I bought some memorabilia after a year at a school. I left a purple sign in the car near rear window that said “Wildcats on board.” After a while when I forgot about it, someone in another car in CT stopped his car and shouted “Are you really a Wildcat?” - I put away the sign afterwards, as I wasn’t in any sports.
I did see several bumper stickers that say “My son/daughter and my money go to XXX (school).”
They do sell them.
Regarding kids loving stickers… my (work) laptops were always covered with many (cartoon character) stickers inside and out. I had to explain (that I didn’t do it myself ?) whenever I went to meetings. My friend said that’s less embarrassing than finding out at the end of day her clothing had stickers on. - Joy of working mom with toddlers.
@payn4ward i will take stickers on my clothes over puke any day. Not sorry to have left those days behind
Some schools handout ( free) sackpacks ( to the kids ) but the tote bags they sell in the student store are really nice and great conversation starters everywhere you go. I can’t believe how many people I’ve met just by carrying around Vineyard Vines bags with the school name on it - students, alums, parents- past parents/grandparents, faculty… it’s been a lot of fun.
Skip the decal and buy a tote bag!! ( They last forever, too )
Putney sent all new students (I can’t remember if it was accepted or enrolled) a beautiful hand thrown mug made by an upperclassman with the Putney Elm tree stamped into it. That’s a different take on merch
Here is a list of things we received last year after my son was admitted:
Handwritten postcards
Personalized emails
Mass emails
Phone calls to student/parents
Poster
Candy (M&Ms, chocolate bars)
T-shirts
Magnets with school logo
Coupon for buying stuff at school store
Pancho
Umbrella
Fancy sit down lunch (parents-faculty)
Informal cafeteria style lunch (parents-students-faculty)
Watch a special presentation for admitted students (play, math presentation, singing)
Watch sports match between school and opponent
Meet-up session with coaches and club leaders
Pillowcase with the school logo
Blanket
Contrarian view: I’ve never been a fan of certain school stickers on cars, especially elite names that scream wealth and privilege. There are a lot of people who feel bad about themselves when they see them (if they even know the school). Kind of like having your nose rubbed in “I’m not special enough, or smart enough, or rich enough” dirt. For some, the stickers are no doubt positive conversation starters. But mostly, I think that they’re obnoxious statements of privilege. I feel the same way when someone comes into the corner gym in his or her Harvard or Exeter t-shirt. If you’re lucky enough to attend one of the elites, quiet modesty is better than a public brag. If you want to show school spirit, find another way to do it.
If they are in a fancy car you could say the same thing. So, really I think it’s silly to let other people make you feel bad because they wear a tshirt.
