What to major in for pre vet studies?

I was thinking animal science, biochemistry, or biological sciences with an emphasis on animals. Which, in your opinion, would give me the best shot at getting into a vet school?

My daughter was a biology major. She considered animal science while in high school, but we were advised that a broader degree would be better because it allows for more options - especially if you don’t get into vet school.
It is important that you visit the websites for any vet schools you are interested in and read through their requirements. They’re all going to require core science classes like organic chemistry with lab, but some may list animal nutrition or the like so plan your undergraduate studies accordingly.
Whatever major you choose, keep those grades up! Vet school admission is incredible competitive. The cumulative GPA for UTK accepted students in 2010 (the most recent reported year on the site) was 3.62 for in-state students.
You’ll also need to start accumulating animal/veterinary experience. Experience weighs heavily in admissions and you’re going to need strong letters of recommendation. If I remember correctly, two letters should be from vets you worked with/for.
I hope this helps. I’m mom to a 2013-14 admission cycle applicant, so I’m just offering what she’s found out along the way.
Best wishes :)
