It's my junior year, and I'm feeling the pressure of trying to get into an elite college. I want to demonstrate interest by emailing the admissions officers, but honestly there's nothing I feel I can ask that isn't found on their website. Does anyone have any good question ideas for an admissions officer?

You’re mistaken. Most “elite” colleges don’t care for your mundane questions. They’re not some dude to be courted and flirted with. How to show interest? Apply to them. That’s what they want.

How to be memorable to them? Do something memorable.

Ask what his/her favorite cookie is

^LOL

First of all, admissions officers are now swamped with the applications from the current senior class – they don’t really want emails from juniors until after this cycle is over. And if you can’t think of anything to ask that isn’t on the website, then you are better off not emailing them at all.

I’m actually serious too - a little humor does not hurt anyone, especially when they are stressed about all the applications they have to go through. But don’t only ask a humorous question; follow up with a pertinent question.

just don’t do that… it won’t help. do well in school and submit a standout application next year. that’ll get you in.

Ask them for their Swiss bank account number so you can wire the money.

Honestly though, most admissions people would prefer you rather not try and do what you’re proposing. You are more likely going to create a negative impression rather than a positive one, if you make an impression at all.

I personally wouldn’t try to inject humor into the equation over email…people can take what are meant to be “funny” things different ways.(ex. could an uber serious admissions officer become even slightly concerned about getting a huge box of his/her favorite cookies as a bribe after you as a question like the one you posed?). Of course in an interview etc. you can read the person and comment as you see fit.
