I have decided to pursue medicine and I need help in deciding what classes to take. I am starting at a community college in order to save money, but I quickly found out that it's best to not take pre medical requirements at a CC. Should I just take gen-eds and transfer after a year, or should I take classes that will prepare me for Calc, Bio, Chem, OrgChem?

Depending upon the articulation agreements your CC has with your local colleges, you may need to take some of your pre-reqs at the CC. If you live in CA and are planning on a science major, you may need to take them all at the CC to fulfill transfer requirements.

What’s your planned major?

If it’s in the biological sciences, then you should go ahead and take intro bio since you will be taking upper level biology at the 4 year college.

If you plan on being a biological or physical science major, also go ahead and take gen chem and physics.

Regardless of your major, save Ochem for the 4 year college if possible.

For all majors, you can take: calc 1, statistics, sociology, psychology (topics included on the MCAT), freshman writing and an English elective. Maybe physics.

Regardless of your major, the bulk of your science coursework should be taken at the 4 year college to demonstrate to the adcomms that you’re capable of handling med school level material. This means most your pre-reqs if you’re a non-science major. If you’re a science major, your upper level coursework grades will demonstrate this.

Be aware there are a very small number of medical schools (maybe 3 or 4) which will not accept any pre-reqs done at CCs.
