What to wear for the interview

Regarding the interview, I am planning to wear a suit, gold tie, and a large diamond stud earing (I'm a white/asian male who looks white). Do you all think this is too risque? I don't want to look boring...

Yeah... why risk giving the wrong initial impression?

I also wore a suit and gold tie, although no earings, and I got rejected. lol ...but probably not actually for that reason.

I think you should probably judge for yourself what you look best in. I think some people actually look good in suits, while others look a bit boring. Anything between shirt & tie and suit is probably in the good range. Just don't go in too informal (or too formal, like a white tie). You just need to show the interviewer that you're treating the interview seriously rather than some normal-day routine.

You should dress in such a way that you'll feel confident and not be distracted by worrying about whether what you're wearing to the interview is appropriate. If you're concerned enough about the tie and earring that you're posting on the message board about them, you should lose them.

Neat casual is fine; sweater (crimson preferred) and khakis will do. You don't really need a suit and tie unless you're meeting your interviewer at his law office or whatever.

Unless an applicant wears something vulgar, sexist, racist, filthy or stinky, I don't care what students wear to interviews. It's not a fashion show. I'm far more interested in what's in their minds than what they are wearing.

Thus far, I've seen applicants wearing outfits ranging from suits to funky artsy attire. None has made any difference in terms of what I thought of the student.

If you want to obsess about something related to your interview, obsess about figuring out why you've chosen to apply to Harvard and what you feel that you have to offer Harvard. Take the time to review Harvard's web site so you don't announce to your interviewer that you plan to major in business or journalism.

does harvard contact you for an interview after they receive your app, or you have to schedule it yourself?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I guess I'll just do how I feel and feel how I do.

Did you guys ever here the "grandma" theory? Wear what you would wear in front of your grandma. You wouldn't wear ripped jeans and a Nirvana t-shirt, but you wouldn't deck yourself in a three-piece suit.
Probably polo-shirt and khakis for guys, and the corporate casual equivalent for girls. (lol, I don't know what that is.)

The local interviewer or committee will contact you.

the Admins who work the phones are usually the experts and REALLY helpful with the inside info..... Just call and be friendly...say..." Hi....I have an interview at blahblahblah....ok..just a question...do most high schoolers wear a suit, coat & tie...or what? oh ok....Thanks..."

question... for students applying RD (myself), should we schedule an interview b4 or after the application? I have no clue and my counselor is useless >< Vancouverite here.. thx for help^^

guys... ***... you get your intervierw after you subvmitted the app.
