What TOEFL iBT score should you get for Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford etc.???

What TOEFL iBT score should you get for Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford etc.???

I don’t know but I imagine anything above 110 or so would be good?

No one cares about your TOEFL score in the US. They don’t even ask for it. Just take the SAT and do well on the CR and W sections. Save your $150.

But I read in the websites that all international applicants require them.

Most of the schools will wave it if you have a good verbal score on SAT, so check with admissions website of each specific school to see the exact score, if any. It never hurts to get as much as possible, but generally if the requirement is, say, 100+, there is no big difference between 101 and 119 – it’s more of a pass/fail test to determine if you can use English in your everyday life. SAT is much more important.

Not if you score well on the CR section of the SAT.

I get so annoyed when I read posts advocating that students take SAT, take SAT, take SAT. Guess what? Most students heading to the US don’t come from English-medium schools or have the opportunity to take good-quality English classes. They go to the US to gain proficiency in English. This International Students subforum /just/ happens to be dominated by those high-proficiency students, well, it is a English-medium forum.

Take the TOEFL if you’re an ESL learner. (English as Second Language) A score above 100 should be sufficient.

I don’t advocate that you take the SAT, in fact, I’m really against the SAT, but since you want to go to school in a country that speaks English, you might want to do well on your TOEFL so as to let the school know that you can adequately speak and write the language and that you can express ideas in it.

If you can speak and write English adequately, don’t worry about the TOEFL. Worry more about your college essays.

Well, most of the top 100 national universities require SAT so you’ll have to take SAT or ACT any way if you want to apply as a regular student.

I won’t even bother to reply to that except to point out that your viewpoint epitomizes narrow.

As an international student in the US I can tell you that it is vital that you take the TOEFL, you can´t apply to a college without it. Only certain schools ask for the SAT from foreign non-English speaking students, so check the with the admissions office (or their website) for more information. I got accepted to Columbia University with my 112 TOEFL score, they ask for 100 points as a minimum, no SATs needed. The most important element of your application is your essay so give yourself plenty of time to make it perfect. Good luck.

Lilyrosa,
I read your post with interest as you are the first person I know admitted to Columbia without submitting SAT/ACT scores. This despite the Columbia website stating that SAT/ACT is required for international applicants:

"Testing for International Students

English Proficiency Examination
If your home language is not English and if your primary language of instruction has not been English for at least five years, you are required to take an English proficiency examination, either the TOEFL or IELTS.

SAT and ACT Testing
Most international students submit SAT scores. If you take the ACT in place of the SAT you must take the ACT with writing if possible in your country."
Apparently Columbia is willing to waive the requirement for exceptional candidates. It’s good to know that. Do you know if this is common? Are there others you know admitted to Columbia without SAT.

p.s. I’m aware that Chinese applicants are exempted from taking SAT as the test is not available in China.

For MIT they say:

Minimum: 90
Recommended: 100+

hey everybody, i see the discussion here is very live, can get very important things here,

so i am taking toefl iBT soon and last time i got only 73 . i am now studying at SBCC in Santa Barbara but i want to go to Stanford or Princeton by getting a scholarship, so i am working now on my toelf again

the question is, can i get paid full tuition fee with a high toefl score?

is there anu university in the country which offers full scholarship to international students ?

You will be applying as an international financial aid transfer, a very very competitive field. I suggest you forget about Stanford or Princeton; Stanford has very little Financial Aid international transfers and Princeton does not accept transfers, period.

We will need to know your college GPA and extracurriculars in order to estimate your chances effectively. However, some colleges you may want to consider are Connecticut College, Mount Holyoke (females only). Check out this forum: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/

Upenn doesnt require TOEFL if you get at least 650 on CR ,which actually makes sense :)

I’m sorry to ask this but, what is CR??
Sorry again, I’m quite in this field, Apparently I’ve just started to care about my future.
<< LOL!

CR stands for Critical Reading section of the SAT 1 test

as an international who got 119/120 in the toefl iBT. i can say toefls are used by colleges to see that you can actually speak/listen/read/write the english language sufficiently enough to attend classes.

I don’t believe it is a major admissions factor for college apps but rather just to make sure you have some sort of knowledge in english.
score over 80 is fine at most, over 100 to be safe. but getting 119 or 120 is not going to have the same impact as 800 in CR or something.

Wesleyan University states that the average TOEFL iBT score of their accepted students is 115.
Is the average for HYPS 118 or what?
