What was your GPA/grade in these AP classes (phys, calc, etc)? What's a good grade?

I'm wondering what an above average GPA would be in my difficult AP classes. Two of them are taught by the same teacher - a past NASA scientist.

These are my AP classes this year. What would be a good grade for students looking into the top 20 and most selective colleges?

AP Physics C - 3.4 (87, B+)
AP Calculus BC - TBA
AP US Gov. Pol. - TBA
AP Computer Science - 3.2 (85, B) ... dropping this class.
AP Lang and Comp. - TBA

Would getting Bs in these classes rule me out of the running for top schools? What if my grades were comparatively lower than 9th-11th grades (all As and A minuses), and I was purposefully challenging myself?

I don’t think the B’s would affect you that much, Nobody can be perfect like I have a B plus on Geometry and AP World history in on quarter and All A’s the rest of my classes.

Ex) Geometry: 1st quarter: B+, Second quarter: A Midterm: C, 1st semester grade: B+
APWH : 1st quarter: A, Second quarter: B+ Midterm: B, 1st semester grade: B+

The lowest grade I have is a B in French and I’m sure some B’s are ok, might be acceptable for the colleges you want to go, but try to get A’s, At least it is not a C.

I also have the same goals as you I’m trying to get into Harvard and I really need EC’s so I guess we are sort of in the same boat.

Colleges also look into other subjects like hours, Ec’s, and SAT & ACT & SAT 2 scores.

Also, those classes are college level and colleges will understand that its hard to get a high grade so they’ll probabiliy understand why you have those B’s.

Hope this shines a light in your view. :)

Can you please answer my question? link: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1451243-help-class-scheduling.html

Thanks. Any high school seniors or graduates can relate to this?

since you are aiming for top 20 schools, i would say you should be getting at least 4 As and maybe one B. No C period. Of course one bad grade can’t completed rule out your chances.
in Sophomore and Junior year, my son received straight As. His course loads was very similar to yours (sub AP Physics with AP Chem)There is no guarantee he will get in to any top 20 school. We will find out in April.

If you are looking at the top 20, no C’s are allowed whatsoever. You must have mostly A’s and as little B’s as possible.

No C’s? Wow. I was ruled out from the top schools the moment I got a D in gym…

Well… I don’t have any Cs, but up until senior year, I didn’t have any Bs. I’m sort of depressed that I failed myself, and I’ve convinced myself that I’m less intelligent, and therefore, incapable… To my credit, I had A LOT of events and travel going around the country and Canada, and I was involved in a bunch of clubs, but colleges will probably frown upon my trend from As to Bs in senior year. It’s sad to say but true. I wish I hadn’t signed up for 5 APs. This is what I get for challenging myself.

^Say, What school are you looking at?

@Descuff - Thankfully, I applied to a bunch of schools. A couple reaches, a bunch of matches, and a couple safeties. I was already accepted at the University of Washington and UCSD on athletics.

Reaches I applied to were H, MIT (#3 recruit, deferred EA :frowning: ), Brown, Cornell (recruit), Williams, and Duke.

Other schools that are considered reaches: BC, College of the Holy Cross, Bowdoin, Washington and Lee, and WUSTL.

Most my schools consider best scores, so my SAT superscore is 2110 (CR 680, M 690, W 740). ACT S.s: (E 34, R 33, M 31, S 32).
