OMG, funny story time! Our Town is my favorite play, and my junior year English teacher knew that, so when we did a staged reading of the play (so that we’d understand it better than if we just read it) he cast me as Emily… and in the last scene, I was just really into it and I actually started to cry! It was soooo embarrassing, but apparently it was effective because about four people came up to me afterwards and said I made them cry!

I am. I just generally tone it down for class readings, because it’s so weird, being the only person, or one of two people, who acts the part instead of just reading it.

Again, I totally understand.
I thought I would die of boredom when we read Julius Caesar in Brit Lit… I mean, these guys are, like DYING and making all of these dramatic, charismatic speeches, and the least anyone could muster up from within the depths of their souls was a mispronounced monotone. Uck.
Although I’m not considering a career as an actress. I just enjoy my speech and drama events very much. : < D

chellybelly, i know where you’re coming from. i was elizabeth proctor in the crucible sophomore year, and my junior english class read it… rather frustrating when no one gets as into the play as you do.

my faves:
Norwegian Wood-- Haruki Murakami (just finished this last night, like a more amazing Catcher in the Rye)
His Dark Materials series-- Philip Pullman
Cat’s Cradle-- Kurt Vonnegut
Time Traveler’s Wife-- Audrey Niffenegger (could not put this down)
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close-- Jonathan Safran Foer (mindblowing)
Garlic & Sapphires-- Ruth Reichl (a food critic writing anecdotes about her job. very cool.)

deenierah, have you read Everything is Illuminated? I’ve heard good things about Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, but I absolutely /loathed/ Everything is Illuminated… and none of my friends have read both books.

Ooh, another great book to add to the list: Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. Hilarious and thought-provoking at the same time. My favorite passage from a book ever is the bit about the crabapples. (:
