What will a low GPA but a High ACT do for me at these schools?

I had an SAT of 1810 and took the ACT in October not expecting much, but I found out a couple of days ago that I got a 31 on it so now everything is in a whirlwind. My unweighted GPA is only a 3.23 but i have a weighted GPA of 3.78 (UC GPA: 3.46, 660 Math II 650 US History). What do you guys think my chances are at:

-Michigan (EA)
- Wisconsin (Early Notification)
- Syracuse
- Texas
- Washington
- UCB
- UCSB
- UCSD
- UCD

I was not expecting this score, so I'm more nervous than I was before at this point! Thanks in advance for responses!

Your GPA should be viewed in the context of your school profile…is it considered a rigorous school with deflated grades? My son attends such a school and it is not at all uncommon for students with GPA’s like yours to be getting 2000+ on the SAT and 30+ on the ACT. However at his very mediocre public school, seems so many kids have 3.5+GPA’s and they’re all testing sub 1800.

My school is definitely one of the tougher ones in the area if that answers your question. We sent about 17 graduates to UC Berkeley last year and over 10 to UCLA and USC each. I don’t know how much that would help me though!

anybody else??

I would say you now have a shot at UCD and SB. Your UC GPA is quite low with their 4.0 averages, but your ACT is above average. Do you have a safety UC? Not sure I’d want to pay the OOS costs for the others on your list (except perhaps) Wisco.

Im assuming you’re full pay given all the OOS publics, so I’d recommend you consider more privates. Private college with their more holistic approach approach may give you more of a break on the GPA.

3.23 UW GPA=No chance at michigan. even a 3.5 is considered low;

I checked my son’s school’s Naviance page for the heck of it. They have sent 21/68 applicants to Michigan over the past 5 years. Average GPA is 3.42 with an ACT of 28. GPA range was 3.1-4.0. No athletes. This is from a top ranked New England prep school. Using SAT scores, average GPA was 3.6 (don’t know why the discrepancy) and a 2069 SAT.

Michigan (EA) don’t know

Wisconsin (Early Notification) don’t know

Syracuse: slight reach

Texas: reach

Washington: slight reach

UCB: 5%

UCSB: 50%

UCSD: 20% (unless you’ve got some diversity points for 1st Gen college, low income, etc.)

UCD: 50%

Your problem with the UCs is that your “UC GPA” is under the 25% for all except Riverside and Merced… and low-ish for UCSC. UCs care relatively more about UC GPA than SAT or ACT scores/ reason is they don’t have the staffing or desire to baby sit smart but undisciplined kids.

Wny don’t you have any matches or safeties? UCSC? UC Riverside? San Diego St.? Lots of great schools in CA for UC GPA of 3.64 that aren’t in the top 6.

If you are applying from out of state I would halve each of the UC numbers I gave above.

*Im assuming you’re full pay given all the OOS publics, *

Very true. If you’re a Calif resident, then expect to pay for all of your out of state costs at schools like UMich, UT, UWash, and UWisc if you get in. They’re not going to give you need-based aid to cover their high OOS costs.

If you can’t afford these schools high costs, then you need to apply to schools that will give you need-based aid (depending on income/assets) or merit scholarships (from your stats).

I see that you’ve been accepted to UArizona. You’ll now get a better scholarship from them with your ACT 31. Do you know how much?

I’ve also been accepted to Indiana ($16000 scholarship) and Oregon too, so those are my safeties lol. I do not know how much, but I am hoping a lot more (I have a $24000 scholarship rite now). I moved to California from Maryland after sophomore year and my current school does not count weighted classes from Maryland… otherwise my weighted GPA would be upwards of around a 3.98… I took 5 honors classes freshman year, 5 honors and an ap sophomore year and 3 ap and 1 honors class junior year so I really have taken a tough schedule throughout high school. I’m at an extremely tough public school so hopefully that will help me out a bit

Plus i have pretty good EC’s and I have really good essays (one about starting school in california and one about my deceased brother) if that helps at all
