Again, take this from a NON-IVY/Top 20 perspective. Basically during my darks days of high school, i was still lazy and organized and my first 3 semester i had a cumulative average of 2.5. Anyway i'm doing better now BUT after my first semester of Sophomore year i dropped AP NSL(government) because I thought i legit failed the exam(end of semester exam) but i ended up getting a C which wasn't too bad for me during my dark days. Anyway I went into Honors NSL and did very well and received an A. I didnt get a W or a F it literally says on my transcript 1st semester AP NSL:C and 2nd semester Honors NSL: A. So how does this look to college admission officers?

No one single course makes or breaks an applicant. For you, the issue is to demonstrate that the ‘dark days’ are over, you’ve turned it around and the new, more mature, more academically focused student is here to stay. Lots of schools don’t even look at freshman year of high school. Many discount it heavily, especially for guys. An upward trend is your best friend starting right now.

Your second best friends are the teachers who will write those recs about how you transformed yourself and are now a major contributor to class and a pleasure to teach. Add some decent test scores (practice!!!) and a couple of interesting ECs or a job to show that you would be a net plus to the student community that accepts you - and you should be on your way.

Agree with M’s Mom. They care more about overall trends than one class. Especially since you went from a C to an A, it looks good if anything.

ite bumping this for the last time
