Hi everyone. I'm a 9th grader who got into a 4-week residential summer program at UCSD. Apparently we are going to be in the ERC suites. This is what it should look like:

I guess the single is for the RA. I have questions:

I'm a very shy person with a social anxiety disorder so do you think my roommate might be frustrated by me?

Where do you take a shower and how many showers are there? (I mean is there one shower room per suite or is there a shower/bathroom in every room)

What's in the common room?

Would I be able to grow small plants in the window of the dorm? (I know this sounds weird but I really like gardening)

What's it like when you first meet your roommate?

Are there some things you would recommend me to bring that are less well-known as things to take to college?

The rooms don't have air-conditioning by the way.

Looking at that blueprint, I would guess that the showers are the Xs in bathroom, and that there are three shower stalls: two standard size, and one handicap-accessible. That bathroom is shared with all of the bedrooms nearby.
Most common rooms have sofas, chairs, and tables so that you can hang out and talk or play games with others on your hall.
In four weeks, you are not going to be doing much gardening, but many people bring small plants from home.

I would guess that students in a high school program are going to be a little more shy, and might wear sweats or a robe down the hall from their bedroom to the bathroom.

Just bring some $2 flip flops for the shower, maybe a frisbee or something that you can play outside with, and you’ll be good. I think UCSD is a bike friendly campus, so you might want to bring that or a skateboard if you want to easily get around the school. Remember, if you’re having problems, talk to the RA and he or she will help you out.

@whenhen For my summer program we aren’t allowed to bring bikes or skateboards but thanks for the help. A frisbee is a good idea because they did say we could bring sports equipment.

I would bring a robe to wear to the shower.
Bring a fan for the heat.
If you have social anxiety, it will take you extra effort to join the crowd and make friends. Try to do as many of the group activities as you can. But if you need a break, then stay back “to do homework”.
Remember that all the other kids are their to learn and have fun and meet new people.
