@sorghum LOL. In the town we used to live in each parent was “asked” to contribute $30 per kid and that was collected by the homeroom parent. Some homeroom parents would send out notes about who had/hadn’t paid. It was a public school! I thought it was very distasteful but I did pay. As my kids got older I told these folks that we were going to do our own thing and we did often with a nice note and a Starbucks card rather than a large donation where some people paid and some didn’t.
And barista’s often have a jar. The tip thing has definitely gone too far.
I don’t think a gas station attendant could ever be high paying as they might make a total of $20 with tips ( tops).
