What would you do in my position?

Stats:

Crappy non-target Finance major with low overall GPA but high finance gpa (3.9)

Junior

SAT: 740M, 700V

Finance internship after sophomore year for large company

I know my chances of getting into a BB are slim to none so am looking into transferring to a top tier school. I am pretty sure I can get excellent letters of recommendation and write a mean essay.

My worry is that transferring will set me back a year, but the way I see it 1 year will be hugely beneficial.

On the other hand, I could go and do a masters at a top school right after undergrad like Oxfords MFE and use that to go and get recruited.

What do you guys think?

To be frank, you probably can’t transfer to a top-tier school with your stats, so I’d go with the prestigious grad program, though I’m not sure how you intend to get into Oxford with a “low overall GPA” from a “crappy non-target.”

Well, I have a 3.4 which while crap, is only just below the Oxford average of 3.5. And I’m pretty sure I can putt it up to a 3.5.

As for the transfer, if you could, would you?

If I could transfer, I would.

Well you’d have to transfer soon since you are already a junior. You know that Oxford’s MFE program is really difficult to get into with a great GPA and stats from a top school right? You’d probably have just as difficult time getting into that program as you would a Banking internship.

I’m not sure where you got the average GPA stat from btw.

If I were you, I would focus on either transferring or landing a boutique IB internship. With a strong finance GPA, and some accounting coursework (I am assuming you’ve taken a few courses), you should attractive to smaller boutique IB shops that need interns who are able to hit the ground running in terms of quant and analytical acct/finance knowledge as they don’t have formal training programs nor the time/resources to train 1 person.

If you are set on a BB, your only shot will be to network your tail off and possibly take an extra year to build your network and attempt to leverage a boutique internship coupled with some contacts into a BB or strong MM shop interview.

Transferring would be a good idea, but given your GPA and how late you are in your U Grad career, you might find that difficult. Regarding the Master’s option, you will probably have a very hard time breaking into that as well. Between the 2, I would recommend transferring to a target school and sticking around an extra year rather than going for the Master’s program. Given that you will be a stretch for each, I would go for developing your network and trying to land an IB internship with a no-name or small boutique to make yourself more appealing, while taking some of the focus off of your lack of U Grad pedigree. Good luck.
