What would you say to a child choosing between Brown and St. Olaf?

Heavens no. Try southern California - the land of shallow, smiling, indolent airheads. Fools with no character, having gone soft thanks to the mild weather.

Collecting unflattering stereotypes about CA is hobby of mine. I love it.

Correct.

“$50k skin in the game is not an unreasonable goal. Stafford loans get her to $27k (and are a better deal than private loans), which leaves $23k to be earned over four years. That comes out $5750 in earnings per year – divided by a $10/hr. pay rate, is 575 hours of work per year, whether that happens over the summer or during the school year.”

Err, but that’s $50/k a year and $200,000 total. She definitely needs help from parents to swing that.

As far as making money at Brown goes, there are a lot of available jobs on campus, though the pay rate is more like $8.75/hr rather than $10/hr. Getting a job at one of the libraries that involves being a desk attendant is a good starting point—you get to just sit there and do hw most of the time, so not only do you make money, but you are forced to be productive and get work done. Esp. cool during finals. Then she can add other part-time jobs on top of that. I work multiple jobs and pull in around $4,000 during the school year. Last semester I took five courses, worked three to four jobs(earned around $2300+), participated in two clubs, and had still found time to socialize(hooray Saturday nights). So it’s definitely do-able to balance work with the rest.

The parent was talking about four-year totals.

The parents were willing to pay $150k towards her four years, with the expressed understanding that if their D chose this option, she D would be taking on another $50 towards expenses herself.

The $10/hr. assumption I used is the rate my S is currently making at his non-w/s job on campus. He hopes to make better money next fall now that he knows the local student job market a little better. He is making more than $10/hr. this summer in a research position. Last summer he made $2650 in eight weeks ($7.75/hr.) as a camp counselor. The rest of his share was do-able w/10 hrs/wk on campus.

Ah I was skimming and missed that part. Well in that case you’re right. There’s also a “find a job” website https://financialaid.brown.edu/JobX_FindAJob.aspx</a> and a list serv she can sign up for to get notified whenever jobs are posted. I’ve seen some nice offers for tutoring on that website, but it usually goes to the first few who apply.

tk21769, all is forgiven. I should have recognized the comment for what it was. Maybe I’m too think skinned but it does get old living in a state referred to as one of the fly over states. I visited St. Olaf with DD last summer. I thought it was a gorgeous school with top notch programs. Did you know that they had 2 Rhodes scholars last year? We had one for our tour guide. She was delightful. DD didn’t like the school for some unknown reason but will be attending a different LAC in Minnesota. I think it would be too cold for my taste but she is excited.

So what was the final decision here?

She decided on Brown. She was low-key when she finally checked the box and just left me a note before she left for school yesterday.

Now I have an excuse to visit my college friend in Providence.

Congratulations to your daughter! Brown is a fine choice.

Great to have the decision out of the way!

Congrats! Enjoy!

Tell her good luck!
