<p>I agree with the few others that commented that a million dollars isn't that much these days... especially around some areas of the country.</p>
<p>My family just bought a 700K house and it really isn't that great.. just extremely high housing prices in this area. I would go to college, pay for my college, buy a car(not too outrageous), then after investing, live my life as usual with the knowledge that I already have a great start to a retirement fund!</p>

<p>i seriously read that far and flipped off the computer screen. so what if you dont think its that great? bill gates children probably wont grow up thinking ferraris are worth a dime. but does that mean ferraris are really "not that great"? no, most people would kill to be rich enough to buy a ferrari, and some probably do. so when you say your 700,000$ house "isnt that great," please remember that there are a lot of people out there who grew up in houses costing about a third of yours thinking that it was "just fine."</p>
<p>but i will agree with you. a million dollars isnt really that much. without investing or anything itll only last you 20 years even if you only spend about 50000 a year. thats not that much. id say buy a car, pay for college and put it in the bank and forget about it until you really need it, or someone really needs it. work for a while until you're maybe 50 and go crazy with all your money, maybe get a nice young wife or something.</p>
<p>hmm I'd definitely pay for college. Then after that I'd buy a nice house in my area (one of the benefits of living in a town with low-cost housing) and I'd buy a Saab. After that I probably wouldn't do too much with it just because I'd be afraid that I would spend it all.</p>
<p>pay my way through college, take 10k and toy around in the market, put the rest in the bank until im ready to buy a modest house, own that real estate and rent it while i live abroad for x many years. I would always have plenty of my favorite food and drink. And I'd throw dimes to kids on the street like rockefeller did.</p>
<p>I would buy a ton of videogames and a really nice computer before doing something really special with the money.</p>
<p>Kosuke, before you judge realize that the average home price in the area is nearly 500K. The house is a typical 16 y/o two story colonial with a two car garage. Its about 2500sqft and is probably no better then most of the CCers home. My comment about it "not being that great" was to emphasize that it is not a mansion... and a million dollars around here will not buy you anywhere near a mansion.</p>
<p>Just to give you an idea of how high home prices are... we bought our home new about 10 years ago for about 150 then recently sold it for just over 500...absolutely crazy, IMO. </p>
<p>... it was not meant to offend anyone as I agree that it is a bit outrageous but thats how our society has evolved.</p>
<p>You know what I would do if I had a million dollars? I would invest half of it in glorious mutual funds and take the other half over to my friend Asadulah who works in securities.</p>
