So, as would be pertinent to this group....if your D played a fall sport and arrived before other (general) freshman to do so, would you be uncomfortable if your daughter was slated to be alone in a dorm for three nights before the RA or anyone else arrived?

I already posted on this topic in the parents forum, but I would not be comfortable with this situation. I see no reason why the early arrivals can not be housed in the same dorm for a few days. Even if your daughter moved the majority of her things to her new dorm and just brought her overnight stuff to the dorm occupied by her teammates, at least she would not have to spend her nights alone in an empty building. I would talk to the coach and/or the team captain about getting your daughter in a dorm with her teammates until the rest of the freshman arrive.

Fishy (thanks twice) and Endicott – I think the ones who are making me crazy are those suggesting that we put her up in a hotel. Can you imagine telling the coach that your D is in a hotel? Think of the dynamic that would create! (It’s not under consideration).

In regards to the would you have a problem question.
No.

This must be the college’s standard operating procedure, if your D has not received the answers she is looking for from housing and the coach.

My worry is more in re: to what kind of coach doesn’t answer the phone for an incoming student they recruited?

Coaches have kids too, this “empty dorm is scary” question I believe should be asked by your daughter…would they put their own daughters in a similiar situation?

Most D-1 coaches would house the student in their home if their student is scared or have a grad assistant sleep over with her.

I know an athlete who did not like the used toliet and sink in their suite, phoned the coaches, who came to see then overssaw the installation plus ordered new carpet too.

Don’t understand your worry about a hotel or the dynamic if they are the ones not responding to your student’s needs.

my son is in a similar situation, but only for 1 night and I still do not like it. He is arriving for a sport before anyone else in his dorm. For the next night a girl on another varsity team is checking in. So there will be 2 on the floor. but it still is scary and I dont like it.

For the first night, he will be staying with a friend in his dorm, he is on the same team and was nice enough to offer. For the next night, the two will stay in the girls room with a locked door between them within the suite. She asked if he would stay in her roommates room, so that she would not be afraid. They have talked via facebook and this seemed like a solution to avoid the scariness of the situation for her. I know this isnt a perfect solution, but I wouldnt want him to leave her there alone.

Our conclusion: As of today housing, coach, player and parents agree that D will not stay alone in her dorm. We will set up her room, but she will stay with another player (in another dorm) until her dorm has additional occupants. It’s a reasonable resolution and we are pleased that all are on the same page. Thanks for your insights!

I am so happy to hear this issue was resolved. And with a sensible solution. Best of luck to your daughter with her new team and school! Keep us posted on how things go.
