I’m addicted. Addicted to green chili. Hatch green chili to be exact. I ordered 20 lbs (10 hot, 10 extra hot) for over night delivery. Received them this morning. I’ve roasted, and peeled them. Later today, I’ll vacuum seal them in recipe sized bags and into the freezer they’ll go. I’ll be set through the winter. Yes!
Ooh - where did you order from? This would make a nice gift for DH.
I am terrible with food prep though - and a little envious of the people who plan and use ingredients like that.
We’ve used this company for years now. A little pricey, but their quality is great and we always needed overnight shipping to make sure they arrived in great shape.
With the unofficial end to summer, I decided to pack a comfort food lunch today, instead of the salads I’ve been eating all summer. I am trying a new (to me) idea - Meal Prep Noodle Soup Jars - Budget Bytes
Prepped and packed one for both H and I. We had grilled chicken last night, so added some of that diced up on the bottom layer, followed by matchstick carrots, sliced mushrooms, then al-dente ramen noodles and topped with bok choy. It sure looks pretty - hope the hot water from the water cooler does the trick like the recipe says it will.
I love this idea. I could eat this 4 days in a row! Let us know how yours turns out.
Great idea, but I’d precook the shrooms and carrots. A few seconds of hot water contact will not cook them at all. Not a fan of raw veggies in my soup, but it could work for someone who likes their soup veggies that way.
Shredded carrot (you can shred or buy the little bag of shredded) might work better?
Possibly. But with so much refrigerated stuff in the jar plus a cold jar, the boiling water poured into the jar will be at half of its temperature in a second! Maybe nuke the contents in a microwave for a bit?
My H has his doubts, and that’s what he plans to do with his.
Will be eating within the next hour - I’ll report back for everyone waiting with bated breath! LOL
ok, the verdict: it was good and I’d make it again (with some refinement).
First, I packed the ingredients too tightly in the jar. It took a lot of shaking and finagling to get the dried seasonings on the bottom of the jar to dissolve. So, I think overall I want to use about a third less volume of ingredients.
Next time I’ll use the same quantity of noodles (2/3 of a pack of ramen), but decrease the veggies and meat a bit.
I ended up microwaving it for 2 minutes and then letting it sit for 5. I was happy with the consistency of the veggies - they were not raw, but the carrots and bok choy stems retained a level of crunch that seemed just right for this type of soup. The mushrooms were perfectly soft.
All in all, it was tasty and if I were the type of person that wouldn’t mind the exact same lunch every day of the workweek, I can see the benefit of volume meal prep with this one.
Thanks for the report!
You microwaved for 2 minutes after adding cool or hot water??
Glad it worked out!
There is a lady at work who EVERYDAY for lunch eats one of these type ramen cups for lunch. I need a step up from that!!! (and other stuff in my soup!)
after adding the hot water. As @BunsenBurner predicted…the hot water didn’t stay hot too long once it hit the cold jar. I had taken the jar out of the fridge a few minutes before, but I did not feel comfortable really allowing it to warm up enough to make a difference (since I had cooked chicken in there).
It was definitely a much elevated take on those cups. For the flavoring, I used 1/2 of the packet that came with the ramen, garlic powder, ginger powder, trader joe’s umami powder, Chinese 5 spice, a shot of soy sauce and a squirt of sriracha. The broth was really tasty.
What brand of ramen noodle packs do you guys like?
These are not your “4 for $1” ramen noodles/packs but are good. Nutritionally they are better than the 4/$1 type! They are air dried instead of fried. You can find them at Target stores if you want to give them a try. I always support add ins - vegetables, a poached egg, green onion, etc.
I love those! Although they are not really ramen in the sense of soup. They are not meant to be soup. They are noodles you can put other things with. They don’t refer to the product as ramen or ramen noodles.
That is true…but I always use them as soup making more broth and using them and the seasoning as the base. I guess I really don’t want any of the standard ramen packs “as is”!
My D23 had to come home from college for a week because she has covid. She requested her favorite comfort food – this chicken and rice recipe. Creamy Chicken and Rice Recipe, One-Pot Meal - NatashasKitchen.com
Not what I would normally cook in this hot weather but whatever helps her feel better.
Thanks for this! My D and SIL had a roommate from NM while in med school and his mom made sure they were always stocked. They will be happy that I found them this.
I think I’m going to try this tonight or tomorrow night. I have some chicken in the refrig and need a mix and forget type meal. I don’t love the creamed soup but I’ll give it a shot. Will have asparagus on the side.
