What's a "bad" gpa for MIT?

namkim:

I don't see what YOU have to worry about! Your stats are definitely above average. Mine are actually below their median percentages!

Here is a comparison:
GPA: 4.0 uw Mine is 3.84UW 4.21W
Rank: 1/700s (2 people hold this rank, including me) Mine is 2/580

SAT I: 2180 (690v, 790m, 700w) Mine is 1930 (620v, 650m, 660w)

SAT II:
Math2c - 800 Mine is 800
Korean - 800 (yes im a native =[ ) I took US History and got a 700
Physics - 780 I tool Bio M and got a 750

As you can see, if they judge by stats, you are FAR better than me. Your extracurriculars are close to equivalent to mine. While I have written one research paper and conducted varied research, you're not too far off. Your interests, likewise, show pursuit of your passions.

If only I had the same stats as you! Then I'd have a great chance at MIT. Now, I'd say my chances are above average, buy far from "admit". Though everyone keeps telling me that the application is evaluated as a whole, and that plenty of students with low SATs are accepted, I won't believe it till I look at things from the flipside. Till then, I guess I'm left to counting down =).

How do you have a 650 SAT Math I and an 800 SAT II Math IIC?

my essays were below par

apparantly mine are cliche, at least people find the topic that way...

but in my opinion, a person's passing is NOT cliche or trite, especially if that person meant a lot to you... it really burns me when people tell me that i shouldn't write about that for that reason... it's ridiculous

sorry, end of my rant

atomicfusion:
I wish I knew :-). I took the SAT I twice, scoring 650 on the Math section both times! Interestingly, I also scored a 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam. I hope MIT will se beyond the awkward SAT I score. What's interesting is I somehow relax on the subject tests (although I barely studied for them). While on the SAT I, I always panic. Despite having studied for over 100 hours (and taking the practice tests within the allotted time), I never finish the SAT I sections in time!

namkim:
What are your essays about? Can't be that below par. Hope they work for you. From what I've heard, you don't have to be an excellent writer--just one who speaks with truth and honesty. I've heard of students at MIT who can barely speak English :-). I wouldn't worry about it. As long as your essays are genuine, you should be fine.

cujoe169:
You can make a cliche topic genuine if you write the essay correctly. Maybe, take a different slant on the topic. Or don't approach a "cliche" topic the same way.

yea my essays were genuine but i think they were really weak.

i've read some of my friends' essays and they looked super good.

Haha, generally it's not that they can't speak English, just that they can't write English. Some of my most brilliant engineering friends aren't too capable of writing a paper without heavy reliance on spellcheck (not to mention reliance on a grammar checker/editor, aka me).

Haha...
What I meant.

I know someone who was in the second third of his class, had failed calculus, gotten several Cs, but was still accepted. Not a minority, not geographically diverse, either.

Context.

What was his "context"? Was he somehow disadvanteged? Do you know what his extracurricular pursuits were?

Not disadvantaged economically speaking, that I know of. Nor mentally speaking, he's making As his freshmen classes at MIT.

As for his extracurricular pursuits... he did a lot. Nothing world-changing (curing cancer, umpteen hours of community service), but he loved what he did. He also used the paper application, and had a lot of fun with it (he's a crafty person).

Who knows? Maybe it was his essay. I've read it, it's 239 words, and while short, it's powerful.

Granted, he also believes he was the only person to get in who wasn't in the top quarter of his class, so for those of you who like that sort of thing, feel free to treat him as a statistical anomoly.

Then again, the anomolies tend to be the most interesting...

Do you think he'd mind if you sent me the essay. It'd be interesting to read a short essay that packs as much power as his must have. I'd appreciate it if you could let me know.

i retook the sat today.

i think i got same score as the old one except for mayb writng. i did really well on my essay. i hitnk i got 11+

zking: I'll ask for a copy of the essay, but I don't even have one to send. He posted it on his livejournal, and I'm not going to read through a years worth of posts looking for it. ;-)

namkim:
I don't think your verbal score will even disadvantage you. I wouldn't worry about it. Having a low math score (like me), on the other hand could hurt you.

olo:
Thanks, I'd appreciate it. Also do you have a link to his livejournal?

the message tells me to say hello. hi. i have a question about the gpa thing. im a sophomore at durfee high and was wondering if somene has three Cs through one of the terms but the gpa is over a 3.9, will that really affect what college one wants to be in?

I’m in my sophmore year in highschool and so far have a 4.0 gpa and like 4.7 hpa. I’m taking pretty advanced math classes, and have joined competitive math clubs at the school. Is this sufficient? or is there anything else i should be doing

Actually, it was attributed to Benjamin Disraeli first- but in the end no one is really sure about these anecdotal things. But the quote holds true either way- which is why context matters.

I’m not worried about grades or test scores at all. I really have no control over them beyond a limited extent. The one reason for rejection that I fear is that I’d have nothing to offer them.

Wow, average for admitted is 3.89?..

Sometimes that makes me think it’s pointless applying with my 3.6…

even people with 4.0s have a greater chance of rejection than acceptance. apply anyway :)
