what's a college that's really good at the humanities?

i'm thinking of majoring in either history or literature...but all i hear about are school that are crazy in math or engineering. give me some colleges with good history and literature programs.

I'd remove NU-- its undergraduate programs are too pre-professionally oriented to provide the kind of intellectual and humanistic atmosphere that make for the best training in the humanities.

Chicago, Yale, Columbia, Swarthmore, St. John's, Reed

To the original poster: can you give us some idea of your stats and some insight into what type of college/university you're looking for? Size? University or LAC? Any preferences about location? Urban, rural, suburban? Parts of the country you'd prefer or will not consider? Will you need financial aid or do you hope for merit money? Do you want a school with a student body that leans towards preppy, artsy, alternative, liberal, conservative, Greek? Do you want a school with a rep for being "party central" or a more sedate social scene? Would you consider a single sex school? Is diversity important to you? Do you prefer smaller discussion classes or larger lectures? Do you want a school where you'll do lots of writing, or one where you'll mostly take tests? Etc. Etc. Etc.

It is silly for people to list colleges as being the "Best" at anything without any idea of what you are looking for or what your chances of getting accepted would be. There are MANY excellent schools for the subjects that interest you, so some more details would help us recommend schools that are a good match for YOU. In the end, that's all that really matters, not some nebulous list of schools that are "best" in more general terms.

If you don't want to share your stats publicly, feel free to PM me and I'll be happy to give you some suggestions privately.
