Whats A Good/Great GPA to have in college?

At the undergrad level what would be a decent enough GPA to get you into some academically strong and solid Grad Schools, assuming you're not reaching or aiming for any of the Ivies.

depends on ur major...for engin, it's about 3.5, although MIT, Cal, etc. it's about 3.75

what about for a communications, marketing, advertising, economics, psycholgy, or other social science majors at schools that are on the level of like say Carnegie, USC, Boston U, NYU, U of Miami, NorthwesterN?

You listed schools of highly varying "levels", but I think on the most part, for any college, a gpa over 3.5 is very good. (a top 100 USNWR school)

How about this, what is a GPA good enough for top grad schools?

this is such a stupid question...are u going to try less hard if someone says 3.0 is good enough? your goal should be 4.0

I have a question, if my GPA is 3.17, is it ok to round it to 3.2 on resume etc.?

yes it is boomer. i think the average gpa for a successful harvard business school applicant was 3.67 last year.

usually above a 3.5 or 3.6 is getting on the deans list in college, so aim for that

AbN610,

It's not about trying less hard, I was simply asking because I just want to know where I currently stand.

Everyone can aim for a high GPA, but in all honesty how many people will enjoy the experiance, instead of getting an education that they'll enjoy.

Throughout high school I didn't take any classes that I personally didn't like which meant AP Calculus or AP Statistics, or AP Government, although i was advised to do the opposite. Yet I ended up getting accepted to US News top 50 schools, because I got good grades in classes that I enjoyed. So it wasn't a situation of me being unhappy with what I have to do just to get into a school. A lot of CC'ers here do things because they think it will make them look good when they apply to schools, but these are the exact same people who get rejected by top schools because they think going for what looks great on paper will get them in.

I got a 3.76 in high school, and I'm hoping to beat that--at least a 3.8--in college. If you can get at least 3.75 you're in good shape for any major at any school.

for clinical psych grad programs, a 3.5 is the bare minimum. the average gpa is 3.8

A good GPA to have is going to vary slightly based on what your schools' grading system is and how many points they award for an A-/B+ (if they even have pluses and minuses at all).

My school had a +/- system where an A- was a 3.667, while a B+ was a 3.333. A good GPA for most people was a 3.65, while a great was a 3.8.

that's cool. i personally hate that my school has the minuses and the +. But i guess when you end up getting a B+ in something it's better than getting a straight solid B.

Is 3.5 and above hard to pull of in say...mechanical engineering?

Generally yes.

3.5+ is a solid GPA for grad school (broad generalization, however).

Engineering GPA of 3.5+ from a well respected university is considered very very good.

Its hard to maintain a good GPA in engineering. All the upper level classes are insane. I have a 3.2 GPA and it is considered good. Good enough for grad schools. Just do your best and don't worry about the GPA

It is the one that will get you a job :D

What about transfering to a top 20 school from a top 50 school, would a 3.7 or higher be good?

3.7 will get you into most schools with decent essays/ec's.
