whats a good gpa for college?

i know in HS, u want a very high 3 (3.8) up to like a 4.3 ish is realistic

but in college, where are u expected to be to be good, its outta 4.0 right?

like 3.7+? whats considered really good, and does it depend on school/

well the rhodes fellowship, for example, and other prestigious fellowship/scholarship programs generally draw applicants from the 3.7+ range.

3.7 + is fantastic

3.4 + is great

3.2 + is above average, a solid grade, but not quite enough for really competitive programs if you don't also have some other areas you excell in.

3.0 + is generally average (unless you're in a lot of hard science courses, in which case I'd still consider a 3.0 to be good)

High 2.x are decent, but not that great. . .dropping significantly the lower you go from 3.0.

How difficult is tyo maintain a GPA>=4.0 at Cornell for every semester till u graduate???

are you kidding man...pretty hard

it's been done, but it's rare.

do people really cry after ther recieve their first semester grades...??

i read something stupid like that somewhere...i also remember reading:

cornell is the easiest ivy to get into but the toughest to stay in...

is this true?? or do i just read a lot of crap..:)

arjun
16 year old creating history by getting a perfect 4...way to go.

The saying really gets butchered a lot: "Cornell is the easiest ivy to get into but the toughest to get out of."

What the saying is implying is that Cornell is the easiest ivy to get into in terms of overall acceptance rate, but the most difficult to graduate from due to workload etc.

In truth it really doesn't seem any harder than a world class education SHOULD be; I don't know what students are doing at other colleges, but if it's much easier than what we do here, they must be pretty bored.

As to 4.0s, they're very very unlikely at schools like cornell. A few majors are more conducive to 4.0s, but in general they're very uncommon. From what I have seen, anything above a 3 is good, and in some very competitive programs and difficult majors, even GPAs in the high 2s are very respectable.

One example of this is the Pre-med track. While many of you felt you had "weak GPAs of 3.6," cornell graduates applying to med school with just a 3.4 or higher have a first try acceptance rate just shy of 90%.

really??? because i have a seior at Cornell in Mech Engr separtment (actually he's a close friend too) who got 4.0 GPA in term 1(he's freahman) and said it wasn't that hard.

" Just did my fair share of work" to qoute him

"cornell is the easiest ivy to get into but the toughest to stay in..."

first part-> BIG crap
second part-> BIG truth
whole-> Mediocrly true

Arjun, where did you get that info from?

by sayin difficult to get out...it means its got a TOUGH worload

Its one his typically factual assumptions

Cornell is the easiest to get in but hardest to get out of...I don't know about the second part

Your typing is hard to read

wow... just because arjun got into cornell he is saying that cornell being the easiest ivy to get into is "BIG crap"

fact is, according to statistics it is the easiest ivy
now thats not saying it is easy to get into, but it is the easiest IVY to get into

how does this relate to the OP's p? i think its pretty obvious that cornell is the easiest ivy to get into b/c its also the biggest ivy. i also think its obvious that cornell has a huge workload, making it "hard" to learn in. but at least with hard work you'll get a better education than you would with more grade inflated ivy's and elites (i wont name names).

"fact is, according to statistics it is the easiest ivy" Which stats? The acceptance rate?

Not necessarily. The higher acceptance rate can be explained by different factors, most notably that Cornell is much bigger than any of the other Ivies. Cornell's diversity also makes it seem easier--you'll find that the stats of Arts and Engineering students are comparable to most of the other Ivies; the rest of our students may have lower SAT scores because of the specificity of their respective programs (Hotelies don't need to be math geniuses to do well in the hospitality business, for example). I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you that Cornell is easier to get into (to be honest, I don't really know nor do I care enough to get a definitive answer), I'm just saying the statistics don't necessarily prove that idea.

But stats or no stats- you just can't say that its "Big Crap" that Cornell is the easiest ivy to get into...

"do people really cry after ther recieve their first semester grades...??"

I laughed. I probably should have cried. I tend to laugh in situations in which I should have cried.
