What's amherst known for?

My question is are there any nationally aknowledged faculties in amherst? if yes which ones? i can’t decide on my major, but I am more inclined to physical sciences are they strong in amherst?

er I think it is generally agreed that Amherst is strongest for economics and humans subjects. They produced quite a number of Nobel Prize winning economists =)
about sciences, I’m not that sure, maybe it is still ok. but williams and swarthmore might be stronger

Amherst has a very strong geology program

Speaking quite frankly, Amherst’s science facilities do not compare to those of its peers.

Here’s some recent news about faculty members in the sciences receiving significant grants:

Of the hardcore science students I know, the physics majors have been most pleased with the independent and faculty-directed research they’ve been able to undertake during their time here.

Ideally, you should complement your studies in the physical sciences with studies in the humanities. But, do visit if you can. It’s a unique educational experience, to have the complete freedom to determine one’s educational course.

thanks Kwu. then do you think science students, especially those from non-physics science students would be disadvantaged when they apply to Amherst?
I myself am intending to major in chemistry and have gathered a lot of awards in that arena. The same goes for mathematics as well. However my humans subjects are much much weaker. Is that why I got deferred for Amherst? because they don’t actually need so many chemistry students?

Go to college for the people, the environment, the reputation AND the classes that interest you. Go to graduate school for the subjects that you want to spend the rest of your life in…It drives me crazy that people are so focused on undergrad classes…go to a school with great teachers and you will have great classes…/

No, not at all.

Great. This will only help you.

You explained it yourself: “However my humans subjects are much much weaker.” This is likely the reason that you were deferred, in my opinion.

I know this has mainly focused on the physical sciences side, but here are a few I perceive these as the most prominent professors in the arts and humanities:
