What's an online course like and is it worth it?

I was planning on taking an introductory course for fun (for an elective I guess). The thing is, all the lecture listings for the course are full and I've gotten myself on a waiting list for one. But recently I was able to add an online version of the course. (Someone had dropped.)

I'm thinking about keeping this course in particular, because there are some benefits to online courses. But I was just wondering what online courses in general are really like. (I've never taken one before). I really wanted to take the regular course for a chance to meet new people too. I doubt that's a possibility with an online course. (Biggest drawback for me is this).

Should I try to get that other course or just stick with this one?

I have taken a bunch of online lit courses and a film course (in the english department), and I really enjoyed it. For me, honestly I think taking all online classes would have been extremely beneficial, but I am just that kind of student. You won’t meet new people in an online course unless you set up study groups, and people may not be willing to do that. It’s entirely self-directed, you have to log in every day and be aware of what is being posted and keep up with your work. In my classes, the professor posted a lesson which we had to read, in addition to readings from a textbook, and then we would have assignments to do. I really liked it, the more independent the studying is the better I perform, so it was perfect for me. If you’re not like that, I wouldn’t take the class, and if you were really hoping to make friends and depending on what this class is, you might not want to take the online version. It’s not for everyone and it doesn’t sound like you’re going to get what you wanted from this course if you take it this way.
