So, now that we got into UCLA, what else should we consider to finally submit that SIR to UCLA ?
What are some negative vibes at UCLA that don't exist elsewhere?

Any blatantly honest inputs are welcomed :)

I won’t say about Cal vs UCLA (you can just search for that info in this forum or in UC Berkeley’s forum). But ‘overall’ positives of UCLA:

Good Dorm Food (the best in the UC system, ranked 12th in the nation - By Princeton Review)

Prestigious and well known

Lovely campus

Great location (near LA, Hollywood, Disney, Bel Air, etc…)

Feels secured, good security

Friendly professors and students

Good research institution

Great social climate and environment

Amazingly good weather

Cons:

… and that’s all I can think of right now.

Cons:
Hilly campus
No parking
Freshman are pretty much 3 to a room (built for 2)

If you don’t live in or near LA, please reconsider at least once. No one tells you this but half the school leaves on the weekends because they can just drive home. Keep this in mind when deciding.

Of course, if you live in LA then this does not apply to you.

When do they usually leave, friday-sunday or saturday-sunday? I live somewhat close but I could not imagine coming back every weekend, heck I probably won’t be coming home really except for the big breaks… then again my city isnt the epitome of excitement haha. I guess the quiet time might be nice for some studying or whatnot though. How many students does Cal usually lose on the weekends?

People usually leave Friday night or Saturday and return Sunday afternoon.

Yea, triples for freshmen … I always hated that. But it’s cheaper - so I guess it’s worth the price. If you can get pass your freshman year, then you can get good doubles/singles room for your sophomore/junior/senior year.

Actually that number is more around 20%.

And the pollution is West LA is WAY lower than the rest of Los Angeles (and I feel like I have some authority on this since I’ve taken two quarters worth of classes on that subject). It’s actually relatively “clean.”

About the pollution issue, it doesn’t exist. Coming from Bay Cal, I’ve always had a negative stereotypical view of L.A.'s environment. But honestly speaking, UCLA’s atmosphere is incredible. It’s as if there’s an invisible shield blocking us from the industrial side of L.A.
So don’t let something like this be a factor in deciding.

Con: Light pollution makes it difficult to see stars.
Pro: Hollywood makes it relatively easy to see stars.

From my personal experience, majoring in engineering:
Con: when it comes to enrolling in classes, depending on your standing, it’s a nightmare, especially if you want to get the good profs. But I think it’s like this everywhere…
Pro: recognition?

Con:Impacted classes/majors. Some private schools might not have this.
Pro:Good food, Nice weather, and Prestige(though im sure any other school you’re comparing this to abound in this).

pros: ppl. good looking ppl, bad looking but friendly people. lots of stuff to do. some of the majors here are nationally ranked, overall a great school. oh and parties. i would say its the best college with a legit party scene.

cons: 1) ******bag profs
2) ■■■■■■■■ TAs
3) discussion sections in general because i think they are a waste of my life
4) sometimes its reversed, lectures are waste of time, but you really learn from ur
section
5) see the first 2

This is so true.

/above posts true everywhere probably?

My experience is that most people stay on campus for the weekend. Maybe its just the people you guys are hanging out with.

cons
fob tas. stress

Some people prefer the quarter system, but I don’t really like it. The nice thing is that there are many different ways you could arrange your 4-yr plan, but I mean who the hell wants to take three sets of finals a year instead of two? With the semester system, you have more weeks to diffuse all the work and have sort of a break, but with the quarter system, it feels like you could have nonstop midterms/essays/projects. Happened to me one quarter, where I had like at least 2 things worth 20% of my grade due every week, starting from Week 3 until finals. Maybe that killed it for me.
