Can anyone shed some light on what is up with the Dinghy team? There are no recent postings on the waterfront website about the team. The team roster has not been updated in years. They barely attend any regatta's. I hear rumors of kids leaving the team that came to KP because they wanted to sail. For a school with such an amazing waterfront and dozens of boats, it's rare that that more than a handful are out at practice.

Excellent Question.

Thank you for posting this KPSAILING.... I hope it jumpstarts this ailing team or at least a constructive conversation about it. My life-time sailor Mid was attracted to KP - in part - for Division I sailing; it has been a huge source of frustration for him and a disappointment for all.

The website publicly reflects the lack of care. First, it is difficult to access. Second, the dinghy link shows the team roster and "news" from the 07-08 year - most Mids are graduated and long gone. Lastly, few pictures - or at least none since 2007.

You are also correct in citing one of KP's best assets: the amazing waterfront. To add on to that, one would think that a Maritime Academy would focus their attention, time and some money into boating. In the sailing arena, the offshore team seems to get most of the attention, while the dinghy team seems not to be as valued - even though there are (were) arguably more experienced and qualified midshipman sailors (skippers) on that team.

I know funding issues haunt all KP programs and this is part of the problem. But I have to question leadership as well. My understanding is that many of the Mids have quit recently - and yes, it's a darn shame to think of the mounting gas-free, seaworthy lasers and 420s sitting there collecting dust.

Tsk tsk...check out the Jacob's Rock Sailing center and the Steve Hargis Rowing Center at the USCGA. Come one guys we're maritime services!!! :D

I'm confused, how do the waterfront teams work at KP? Where does there budget come from? If they need financial help, how come they don't ask the alumni or parents for help? Who is in charge now? I thought this area was the pride and joy of KP and the other sports teams were neglected. As far as the web sites go, it seems that some are good and some haven't been updated in years. Why doesn't the athletic dept. take care of all of the web sites? I have a Plebe at KP so I am not yet up to speed on the inner workings of the Academy.

To start- The Waterfront Web Page is in the midst of a rebuild, taking longer than expected, in the meantime we are keeping up this site for information about the Waterfront- Kings Point Waterfront

As for programs, this has been a difficult year- several of our funding sources have been eliminated, and while parents and alumni are donating to the Alumni Foundation, the Maritime Administration is not currently allowing us to access those funds. Hopefully this and other issues will be resolved in the near future. The Kings Point Dinghy Team is the most decorated of Kings Points Teams, and we look forward to returning to our top position. As an example of the built in hurdles the team must face- last year the week before the ICSA National Championship Regatta in Newport our seniors were taking thier license exams, perhaps the most stressful week during a Kings Point Education- our competitors had been out of class for three weeks, on the water practicing.

The Waterfront at KP is the best of its kind in the nation, and while this year proves to be difficult, we look forward to returning our focus to sailing after a difficult year.

that's a great blog,
why don't they at least link to it on the USMMA site?

There is a link on the left side of the waterfront page here-

Thanks for the explanation. Good communication between KP, parents and alumni is the key to avoiding misinformation and rumors. If you need help on the web site you should ask CHIEFNERDNC. He seems to be an expert on computers and web sites.

How is it that the Maritime Administration can control the donations to the Alumin Foundation? If that is true, then how about just donating directly to the team so they can have access to the funds. Does is take over a year to re-bulid and website? If there is an interium site in place, them why no news from the Dingy team. The other waterfront teams have posted lots of news and information. I'm pretty certain that the Dinghy team's problems have as much to do with leadership as they do funding.

Perhaps a Waterfront Parent Association should be explored? There are many of us who would like to support our waterfront Mids in a direct way. We could tap our resources for photography, news articles, updating websites, fundraising and the like.

There are no simple answers here. I'm more than happy to discuss the issues that our programs currently face with concerned parents, alumni or midshipmen. You can find my contact info on the web or PM me here.

Until you visit Jacobs Rock in New London. :D

Have to agree with L59 on that one.

At CGA we have an active parents group that supports the crew teams...I believe the same holds true for sailing.

CGA crew is considered a varsity sport but also gets a lot of support from the Coast Guard Foundation and the Alumni Assoc. Each year nearly 100 cadets participate in crew, roughly 10% of the corps at any one time. These kids in turn become alums and support their fellow rowers. We also have Friends of CGA Crew which sponsors an annual "Back to the River" banquet just prior to Spring Break. They also help with food for the races, which is overall run by the parents group. We raised money privately to buy a new tent for the rowing team/parents to use at races.

"Until you visit Jacobs Rock in New London. "

I'll admit I'm a bit biased toward KP, and it certainly is not a competition- we work together on many things, and I have nothing but complements about a CG organization run by a Kings Pointer.

I think he meant that in good fun...I support all the service academies myself esp. the maritime ones not to mention the state academies...all good as the kids say. :D

New London, CT--(10/12/08)--The Coast Guard Academy Intercollegiate Sailing Team won the silver fleet and finished 7th overall at the Hap Moore Trophy Team Race hosted by CGA this past weekend. 11 teams from both NEISA and MAISA traveled to New London to compete in this team race intersectional. Sailors were treated to beautiful weather and great seabreeze both afternoons which allowed for 80 races to be completed throughout the weekend.

When the first round robin was completed, the teams were divided into Gold and Silver divisions. After losing some very close races in the opening round robin, Coast Guard found themselves in the Silver division. The Bears sailed well versus the rest of the field in the silver division and it came down to the last race with MIT to decide who would finish first. The last race was a battle all the way around the racecourse but Coast Guard was just able to squeeze out the win. Sailing for the Bears were Sam Ingham '11, Ian Oviatt '10, Jon Duffett '11, Kirstin Haas '10, Jenn Hom '09, and Tanya Cuprak '11.

Checking the website, KP was ranked in the top 20 collegiate rankings for as far as I went back (at least the past six years): 12th (2007), 17th (2006), 15th (2005), 10th (2004), 12th (2003), 11th (2002), etc. Not seeing USCG on the rankings though Boss....except a couple of honorable mentions.

Bossf51 and Luigi -What do your comments have to do with the question at hand. Yes CG has a nice facility, and so does KP. So what is your point???

Nobody posts on CGA site.

LOL...they are KP friendly :D We will adopt them
