what's it like?

i would be looking @ case for humanities, so i know the program is trying to improve, does that mean it is not so good now? or is it good just no one is really in it? also i'm a little bit concerned because the princeton review ranked case as having unhappy students. i did visit case though and liked what i saw there a lot.

you cannot base what your future experience at ANY higher learning institution will be by looking at some survey. whether or not a student likes their institution is if they fit in or not, and if you visit institutions and see the "personality" of the institution, and then choose to go to that institution because of personal taste, then it is more than likely you will enjoy your stay at that institution.

what you need to avoid is trying to get into a school just based off of their academic merits and more off of whether or not you will like it.

i am currently a first-year BME w/ pre-med studies student here, and i had choices of NWU, UMich, Purdue(i'm from indiana), and CWRU, and i chose case, because of their environment, and i love it here.

different students have different things to say, but if you go to a school becuase you like it, and not because of some statistic, then you will most likely continue to like it.

as for humanities..i can't help you...sorry :-D

Hi! I'm also a freshman at Case from Indiana. (eri-I'm from Westfield, what about you?) I'm a Biology/Pre-Med major and a varsity swimmer. You definitely need to visit here! I had to chose between Dartmouth, Emory, IU, and Notre Dame. My visit to Case sealed the deal. Of course there are unhappy students here, like any other campus, but I think that the majority really love it here. I'm already having a great time! Yes, Case is trying to improve its humanities programs. I think it increased its humanities majors by something like 300% this year. I'm in science, so I can't help too much. I know that Case usually offers great opportunities in every area. But, you need to make sure to base your decision on things other than academics. It's not everything!! I didn't totally realize that until late in the game. Good luck!

The conclusion on campus is that the reason we ranked so low for that particular survey is because the typical student that comes here tends to gripe a bit more than the average student. So we could end up in heaven and complain that the lighting's too bright and such. ;)
Really though, we're all having a great time and I wouldn't worry about what the Princeton Review says as those rankings change every year!
As for the humanities, my roomie's into them and as far as I tell it's an ok-ish program that's recovering from lack of funding years ago. I do know that it's very easy for the students to do double majors and such in humanities so if you have varied tastes it might be worth looking into.

swimmerkp, i'm from granger, sorta a "suburb" of south bend, so i'm a huge ND fan. like today....i didn't go to the Case game just so i could see the ND vs. UMich game, which ND won...and it was amazing...

what school did you swim for? i saw for south bend clay hs...and our area was known for the south bend riley hs and penn high school swimmers...if you follow boy's swimming at all...like...david cavadini, the 50 free state champ this past year was from riley...

Hey, I swam for Westfield, about 30 minutes north of Indy. I know where Granger is! I do follow boys swimming-Eddie Kenney, who was second in the 50 and 100 free the year before last swam for Westfield.

I've been here for three weeks or so. And I must say that I'm really liking it. I'm taking advantage of Case's sports clubs (martial arts and archery). This combined with homework is keeping me very busy. I warn you I'm not much of a partier (I will leave the dorm and hang out with friends, but I don't go to frat parties and get wasted). If you do want to go to frat parties and the like, there have (so far) been plenty. And the freshman class is awesome. Almost everyone on my floor plays an instrument. And Case girls are not ugly (at least not the freshman class).

Besides all that, you'll be coming to a great university with a very strong academic background. I'm enjoying all of my classes except for my 350-odd student Chemistry class.

There are only 2 freshman Chemistry classes. Chem 105 (350 or so students) and Chem 111 (450 or so students). Every other class is reasonably small (especially for being a general class).

yup, i believe chem has the largest classes at this point. and remember, for some odd reason we're a very disproportionate class, compared to the rest of the classes in the university. and we don't really know how many people will make their way here..becuase of there are only 700 that matriculate, that would make your Chem 105 class about 222 kids and your Chem 111 class about 288, which isn't a bad number at all....i don't think, compared to 350 and 400.

and don't pay attention to the rounding numbers.

estargrl88, in humanities at Case, you have small classes and personal attention from faculty. Look into the number of course offerings in the areas you are interested in and see if it looks good to you for depth.

From what I can tell, Case offers a lot of support and personal attention for all majors. The strength of the school is opportunity for on-campus jobs and research, co-ops, volunteer work at on-site hospitals, etc. - for many students at Case this can be related to their major and career aspirations.

The thing about Case is, look at BabuMohan's post above. About 800 out of 1150 Freshman are taking Intro to Chemistry. These are among the classes that have Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions at night and lots of study groups. If you are not taking Chem, it might seem like you are left "out of the loop" that "everyone else" is in. Don't be surprised if you feel motivated by your fellow students at Case to keep a hand in some Chemistry, Biology or Math.

Your happiness will be all about finding a good fit for you personally. If you liked it, you should apply. And try to visit again, as well as the other schools that you apply to.

Quincy4 has done a great job answering this in these 2 posts:

I was thinking an economy and business major how is Case in these disciplines?

Also my father attended Case for grad school (PHD) do they place much importance in alumni affiliation?

Is Case best primarily for its medicine and engineering?
