what's more important - high gpa or hard classes?

From what I've heard, competitive colleges would rather you take hard classes than get that 4.0. Pretty much, I'd say A- in an AP Class looks better than an A in a normal class. B+ or B, on the other hand, might be pushing it, but it depends on a lot of factors, such as ECs, what the class itself is, etc.

Another important thing to remember is that competitive colleges look at you not for how many AP classes you're in, but rather how many you could've taken at your school and how many you ended up taking.

What are you in right now? (if you don't mind me asking)

I think people really overemphasize the importance of APs. Although a lot of that counts on whether or not your school weights grades. I took a ton of AP and honors classes and ended up with a 3.5 because of it and the fact that my school doesn't weight grades and was rejected from my top schools. I say skip the AP classes, all most colleges want are A's.

based purely on a college admission stand point, gpa > hard courseload. If math isn't your strongest subject, i'd go for A in a regular class. Obviously, the best choice here is to put a little more effort in honors and get that A. =]
