What's Move-In Day like?

Hectic? Crowded?

I live on the highest floor of the building (5 floors) and I'm living in a triple. (So there better be an elevator or something ... Climbing 5 stories of stairs?!)
Only one of my parents is coming with me since the other one has to stay for business. Plus, my Dad might just leave me as soon as he helps unload my things because he has to take care of his business too. It'll be really awkward towards the end of the day when parents greet/hug their kids goodbye and I'll be standing there alone ... on the side :(

How long did it take you to unpack your things and get settled?
Did you hang with your roommates on move-in day or with your parents most of the time?
Did you decorate your room on the first day or did all the decor stuff later like hanging posters or photographs, etc.

Get there as early as humanly possible. At one dorm if you didn’t get there early enough for one of the 10 parking spots (dorm for 100+ people), you had to go into a temporary spot, unload your stuff, and drive off to find parking a million miles away.

To unpack it took me maybe 4 hours to do it by myself. To move out at the end of the semester it took me + dad 4 hours (dad is a bit anal about packing neatly  )

My roommate showed up several hours after I did.

I never decorated my dorm room. Why bother when I’d have to pull it all down in 9 months?

I lived in a 5-floor dorm my freshman year, and I was in a double on the top floor. It only took me and my mom an hour to get everything out and into my dorm, and another hour to get everything set up.

I hung out with my roommate some. Mostly I tried to meet other people too. My mom had to leave right after, because she had to get back in time for work on Monday.

I did decorate my room after I got everything unpacked and settled on move-in day.

As to the parents not being there, I completely understand how that feels. The best thing I’ve found to do is to find someplace to be alone for about 10-20 minutes if you feel really sad, then go and talk to people in the dorm. Immerse yourself in this new chapter of your life.

I don’t know? To make it feel more like home & roomy? Maybe it’s a girl thing lol.

I was debating on whether to get there early or not. I only live an hour away and I want to get the best bed/side of the room before my other roomies get there, but I also want to take my time so my Dad can stay there longer haha. Selfish, but I don’t want to be alone. Plus, when you mentioned car parking/traffic, I forgot about that so I guess I’m going there early.

To balance this out, I took the opposite approach and it turned out OK. Perfectly content living by myself and only saying maybe 20 words a day.

EDIT: Yeah decorating must be a girl thing  I don’t mind bare white walls but every girl’s room I snuck a peek in had to have loads of color everywhere.

It can depend on the dorm and college. generally, and as an RA i am even more expierenced with this it can be a little hectic, but just be sure to have patience and everything will get taken care of. when it comes decorating your room, I guess it depends if you are use to doing it. If you are and it will help you feel more at home then as long as your roommate does not have any problems with whatever your putting up i say go for it. Just make sure you use something which is easy to takeo ff, I had to fine some kids for some of the stuff they used to hang their posters up with. as far as the parents thing, my parents did not stay around the whole day so I was kind of by myself when all the parents and students were saying good bye. It might seem a little sad I know, but I assure you, it wont take long before you are hanging out with your roommate and other people that you will be having al ot of fun. not to say you will never get home sick but if you got a good personality, you will make friends real quick and if you are like me, college becomes a lot like home to you.

Everything will be fine.

^^ Damn you RA’s…is it a job description to be reassuring? :P

haha what bad advice? it is our job to help, esp with fr, to get transitioned into this new chapter of life. Not to say college is all fun and games, and there will never be moments of sadness. It really is a great oppertunity in life, and if you put a lot into it, then your going to get a lot out of it.

That’ll be my room for ya  Loveee colors like ocean blues & lime greens.

What do you suggest I should use? I might be hanging up a painting, whiteboard, calendar, and posters.

Command hooks/strips are great.

Thanks clarinette52! I’ll look into that.

it can depend on the wall but making tape generally comes off real easy. certain types of putty come off pretty good and can often hold the eraser boards and such.

The hooks can work too, I dont see as many people using them, but I never heard any problems with them.

My parents have a similar schedule, which is why I got permission from the school to start moving in the night before the official move-in. My parents are leaving asap when we’re done because my dad has something to be at too (not even sure anymore if it’s a business thing for his job or a music thing he has to play for). There will probably be other students having parents leave too.

Oh yeah buy a roll of 3M blue tape. That was the only adhesive my school said you could use on the walls.

Most parents at my uni hugged and left after unloading the car.

It was a weird moment.

Move-in day wasn’t overly stressful for me or even that crowded. They kind of have it down to a science in matters of getting everyone in efficiently.

Your experience may vary.

TBH I don’t even really remember move in day…and I did it twice. So whatever happens, you can rest easy knowing you’ll probably forget about it like I did.

I just never move in on the first move-in day lol. Just not really a smart thing to do. If you don’t get there early you really shouldn’t bother and should just wait till the next day lol. Overall it took me less than an hour to move stuff in because there weren’t a lot of other people moving in that day. I had 2 luggages, a mini fridge, a box and 1 Gym bag. This year I plan to have only 1 luggage, the fridge and the gym bag. It went really quickly and it wasn’t even a sad goodbye lol. I thought it was kind of weird. We said bye, they gave me last minute advice and they were gone. We all knew that I was ready and would do well and we all knew I wasn’t going to be staying up in the dorms during Thanksgiving or Winter Break so we were just happy that I was starting something new.

I always imagined I would decorate my dorms, but I didn’t and I won’t this year either. This year I only plan to stay in the dorms for the Fall so thats not even 9 months. Its like a waste to put posters and stuff up.
