Hello, Im a freshman in high school and I want to know if I have a chance of getting into suffield academy, taft, and loomis. ive won 2 soccer chamionships and won a musical exellence award in 6th or 7th grade and i have all A’s (4.0 GPA) but i didnt have really good grades last year for my overall grades(i had three A’s, and two B+'s). I will be attending as a day student if i get accepted by the way.
A lot depends on whether or not you need financial aid. If you do it’s tougher to get in.
Have you contacted the soccer coaches to see if they’d like to have you on the team? That makes admissions much easier. Same with music, the school must need to fill a spot in their orchestra or band to help you.
There are a lot of other factors at play applying as a day student including how many other people from your town/school are applying. I live in the same general area as you (near SA and Loomis) and there are tons of day students that come into these schools as legacies, faculty kids, and recruited athletes. It doesn’t leave a ton of spots for kids with just good stats. Try as much as you can to differentiate yourself - contact the soccer coach and/or a music teacher (you don’t have to be pushy, just politely reiterate your interest), prepare well for your interviews by learning a lot about the schools and why they appeal to you, etc. Good luck!
alright, I dont have any clips of me playing violin or soccer but only my friend and I are applying to loomis this year in my freshman grade. I have one question, how should I reiterate my interest politely?
One way is to attend events that are open to the public - games, concerts, shows. Less easy with covid. And talk to people you know there.
Mention this to admissions – “I came to see your production of xyz and would love to better understand how your schedule works as there seemed to be kids in it who also play sports.” Or " I loved how many students were at the soccer game. I was to cheer for friends as much as I want them to cheer for me." Your AO will appreciate that you’re making an effort to understand the school and fit.
And honestly, this is one of the best ways to understand culture - including what the schools don’t necessarily want to showcase. Just watch how people interact with each other. You can learn a lot!
I have but they just told me about their program and didn’t say anything else
Thank you! my interviewer sent me a Christmas card and I wasn’t sure if they sent it to everyone or to the people they liked so I’m trying to figure that out and was wondering if you had a clue. My friend with a 97th overall percentile on her SSAT and is applying to the schools I’m applying to and a legacy is applying to Loomis along w my friend I for sophomore year. I was wondering if they would accept 2-3 people from the same spot because they have around 30-40 spots open right now
thank you!
You have got to stop comparing yourself to other people and wondering which one of your friends has the best shot of admissions.
You have no idea what the teacher recommendations are going to say, these play a huge role in admissions. You have no idea what other kids’ essays will be like. They are also important.
Scores are a secondary factor. They will not get anyone in. This board is full of kids who scored a 99% and got rejected. And there are kids who did “badly” and got into Andover. Scores just aren’t as important as kids think they are.
The strongest legacy is sibling attendance. I know many parent/child legacies rejected over the past few years, and I know many who were accepted.
All you can do is worry about yourself. Schools don’t have a quota. Day students are all going to come from the same area, it’s kind of the definition of day student.
Worry less about others and worry more about your own application. No one here knows you and we absolutely cannot assure you that you will be the one to get in. So put your cc energy into your application.
Poem to “Somewhere” from West Side Story
There’s a school for us
Somewhere a school for us
Preppy, protected, with open air
Wait for us
Somewhere
There’s a time for us
March 10th - a time for us
Time together with results to share
Time for results, time to compare,
Some day!
Somewhere.
We’ll find a prep school that’s giving
FA for tuition and living
Somewhere…
There’s a school for us,
A HADES or bust for us,
Watch this thread and we’re halfway there.
Read our posts and you’ll know we care.
Somehow.
Someday.
Somewhere!
Amen.
