What's my chances for FIT, Parsons, and CSM?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently a junior in high school, 15 yrs old and I'm starting to think about colleges etc. I'm a UK citizen but I've lived in the US for 8 years. I don't have my English accent anymore so I actually don't seem British at all... I'm saying this because sometimes you get better chances of getting into certain colleges when you have a "diverse" accent. I've known for a while that I wanna go to Parsons and that FIT would be my fallback, but now I'm thinking of applying to CSM too.

I haven't decided on a major yet - I'm stuck between fashion journalism and fashion design. Personally I think I'm good at drawing (although I haven't learnt how to fashion sketch yet) but at the same time I love writing. I have a tumblr blog with 10,000 posts about fashion (106oxford.tumblr.com) and some of my artwork is here: Flickr: 106oxford's Photostream

Schoolwise, I get mostly A's with one or two B's, I'm currently in 3 AP classes, one being AP Art History. I haven't taken the SATs yet so I can't say anything about those results.

My dad knows the dean of Parsons so I don't know how much that might help me get into Parsons but it's probably better than CSM.

How should I go about getting into fashion design? I'm thinking of taking some spring sewing classes at FIT or taking a precollege program at Pratt or Parsons, but I'm not sure if they're worth the 3,000$.

Thanks!!

Hey! :)

It’s so nice to see another fashion lover on CC! (You don’t see too many often here haha). I want to pursue a career in fashion journalism but I’m majoring in just journalism. I don’t know a lot of schools that offer a fashion journalism major, but if you are considering this, I think it would be the safest to go for a general journalism major. That way, you can use your journalism degree not just for fashion, but for other purposes as well.

I took a look at your sketches and they’re really beautiful! You really have a talent with drawing. I think that if you want to major in fashion design, you should really concentrate on your ECs and your portfolio. There will be thousands of other aspiring fashion designers, and you want to to make your specific application stand out! Taking classes at Pratt/Parsons would look nice as they demonstrate your passion, but what about helping at the wardrobe department for your school theater? Or looking around for internships at local fashion designers? You could even take fashion sketch classes or start creating your own clothing and setting up an online store.

I applied to NYU as a journalism major a few weeks ago as NYU is my dream school and I’d love to intern/work for a fashion magainze one day, but NYU is truly a reach school for me as my stats aren’t exactly up to par with theirs. It doesn’t hurt to have a dream though, right? :)

Good-luck and I hope you’ll decide on a major and school!

PS. I just followed you on Tumblr! :)
