What's My Grade Standard Deviation?

So I didn’t do well on this test I can tell. The average was 31 (out of 38 questions) and the standard deviation was 4. I think I got a 25. What did I get (even if I don’t want to know…)?

Thanks!

If you’re in engineering, you’ll get really good at this. The key thing is : Don’t Panic! Others will be able to explain better than I, but basically you were a little below the mean. The higher the standard deviation, the more spread out the grades were. For the next one, you would ideally be a little above the mean to even it out. Google for “given mean and standard deviation whats my grade” and you’ll get several good explanations.

@ohwowwoohoo that depends on how the class is curved (if it is curved).

A 25/38 would place you 1.5 standard deviations below normal. If the class is B-centered, 1 standard deviation below might equate to a C, and 2 standard deviations below might equate to a D, for example. If this is the case, your grade would be a C. But that makes a lot of assumptions that I wouldn’t take for granted, and you’d be better asking someone who is familiar with the course, e.g. your professor.
