What's my shot of getting into Loyola (New Orleans)?

<p>Currently a junior, so if you have any last minute tips for me, let me know! I still have one semester left to bring my GPA/SAT up if you think I need to! </p>

<p>Unweighted: 3.3 GPA
Weighted: 3.8 GPA
SAT: 1830
APs: Human Geography (2), US Government (1--awful teacher, still mad about that), World History (3), English Language, Calculus AB, US History, Psychology, Comparative Government
Senior Courses: AP Micro/Macro, AP Latin, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP English Literature</p>

<p>Extra Curricular:
Track & Field, Cross Country, Vice President of Latin Club, Service Club, National Social Studies Honor Society, National English Honors Society, FCA, Ecology Club, Mission Trip to New Orleans (can I even put that?-- just wondering)</p>

<p>OOS student (I have family members who went to Loyola NO if it counts for anything) </p>

<p>Are there any scholarships available? And if you know anything about it, what are my chances of getting into Tulane as well? I've heard Loyola and Tulane share a lot of facilities, but is it really as comfortable as people make it seem? Lol I'm mostly just concerned about that last part because my cousin told me the Tulane gym is state of the art and I REALLY want to use it if I end up going to Loyola.</p>

<p>I am a current sophomore at Loyola New Orleans, so I’m going to try and answer your questions as best I can!</p>

<p>At Loyola, our admissions counselors take a holistic approach to each application. They look at your grades, test scores, the classes you’ve taken, extracurriculars, essay, awards/honors, letters of reccomendation, etc. into account when deciding to accept a student or not. From what you’ve said about your grades/test scores, extracurriculars, having relatives that went to Loyola, and even your mission trip to New Orleans, it looks like you’ve got a fair shot at being admitted, so I say go for it!</p>

<p>There are a variety of scholarships available. About 84% of our students receive some sort of financial aid. When you apply online, you can specify that you’d like to be considered for scholarships. And of course there’s FAFSA.</p>

<p>I’m not sure what Tulane’s admissions requirements are, but Loyola and Tulane do share a lot of resources. For example, Loyola and Tulane students can use their meal plans on both campuses interchangeably. Also, if Tulane has a class that Loyola doesn’t offer, Loyola students can take that class for free at Tulane. Tulane students can do the same with Loyola classes. Because we share so many resources and our campuses are so close to one another, there is a pretty friendly camaraderie among Loyola and Tulane students.</p>

<p>As far as the gym goes, things are a bit different. At Loyola, your student fees include a membership to Loyola’s Sports and Recreational Complex. I believe Tulane has a similar policy. You can purchase membership to Tulane’s gym, but you’ll have to spend a few hundred dollars a year to do so. That being said, Loyola’s gym is pretty nice as well. We have a weight room, two full-sized basketball courts, cardio and strength machines, a multipurpose room, an aerobics room, an Olympic-style swimming pool, and racquet ball courts. The Rec Plex also offers numerous free fitness classes, personal training, and just about every club/intramural sport you can think of. </p>

<p>Also, I forgot to mention something! Just to give you a little more of an idea of what our admissions process is like, here are the average high school GPAs and ACT/SAT scores from the current freshmen class at Loyola:</p>

<p>Thanks for the reply! What would you say the pros and cons are to going to Loyola? Obviously it’s different for everyone and your con could be my pro, but I just want to see what the general benefits and disadvantages are in your opinion. </p>

<p>And what is the Science Department like? Are they known for having quality academics?</p>

<p>I’d say my biggest pro for going to Loyola is that it’s a smallish, tigh-knit, friendly community in a big city with so much culture. The student body is so diverse and you really are exposed to all different ways of thinking that you may not have necessarily been exposed to before. There really is an obvious spirit of good will and acceptance among the students, faculty, and staff, which I feel like comes from Loyola being a Jesuit university. Also, living in New Orleans is an incredible experience. There are so many opportunities, not only for entertainment, but for jobs and internships as well.</p>

<p>The only con I can really think of is that our athletics aren’t as popular of an entity on campus as I’m used to. Being from Alabama, sports are a huge deal and I came from a high school that took athletics really seriously. Because we’re a smaller school, though, our sports teams don’t get as high of a turnout as they might at other schools. Don’t get me wrong, we have a lot of school spirit and there is usually a significant crowd at sporting events, but it could be bigger!</p>

<p>Also, I’m a mass communications major, so I’m not extremely knowledgeable on the science department, but I do have friends in it, so I’ll try my best! Everyone I know who has a natural sciences major, whether it be biology, chemistry, etc., seems to really enjoy their professors. These students have to work really hard, but they stick with it. The professors in the science department are known for being really hands-on and helpful, and they oftentimes offer research opportunities as an undergrad. For example, one of my friends is a freshman chemistry major this year, and the summer before she started at Loyola, she had the opportunity to move to New Orleans early and do research with a Loyola chemistry professor! Also, our chemistry labs were actually recently renovated and are pretty top-notch. So I’d say yes, the science department is known for having quality academics!</p>
