Title says it all; how long does it last? What do we do? Is it fun? Feel free to answer these questions or just to comment in general
It’s 3 days (2 nights) long. During orientation you will learn about college life at UMich (at least when I had orientation we learned about handling student debt, got a tour of campus, learn how to use the buses, how to use your MCard, and many other things that I can’t think of off the top of my head). In addition, you will take your placement exams for chemistry and language (if applicable). And finally you get to schedule your classes for the fall with the help of a peer advisor.
You also get a lot of down time to hang out with other people and get to know the city of Ann Arbor. Honestly speaking, I haven’t spoken a word to any of the kids I’ve met at orientation in like a year, but I know of others who have made pretty good friends through it, so take that for what you will.
Is there a curfew? What time is dinner? I ask because I’d like to go to the earliest date available but it might be during Ramadan
I just signed up for orientation. They don’t officially list a curfew, but they note that activities officially end at 9-9:30PM.
As for dinners, they are from 4:45-6:00 on the first day and 5:00-6:45 on the second day (at least, from the beginning of dinner to the beginning of the next program) but they ask on the registration about special needs, and fasting for Ramadan is one of the options. Here’s what they have to say on the matter:
Ramadan Observance
Ramadan occurs this summer from June 6 through July 5. If you plan to attend orientation while observing Ramadan, please be sure to indicate “Fasting” under the Special Accommodations section when you select your registration date. We will follow up via email with procedures regarding your meals, etc.
Please note: While we would happily welcome you during this time and will make the necessary accommodations, orientation programming occurs throughout the day and into the evening. Due to the length and volume of programming on these days, you may be more comfortable attending one of the orientation sessions that occurs after the observance of Ramadan. Please contact us if you have further questions.
Thank you @CautiousOptimist !!
Yeah they don’t have a curfew
