how was orientation? were a lot of classes filled up?

those who went to orientation..
how was it? could you give details about everything that went on?

and also, were a lot of the classes filled up/were a lot of the good times for classes taken?

A lot of the things during the actual orientation were a little boring for me; you don't actually meet your advisor or "backpack" until the 2nd afternoon. Most of the seminars just will just tell you things you probably already know. You register for your class on the third day. The icebreakers the leaders used were either hit or miss. The real fun begins after the orientation at night when you're basically by yourself with a new group of friends. I suggest checking out pool/Wendy's in the Michigan Union, trying out Jimmy John's, shopping at the cheap T-Shirt place on S. State (I think, they were 7.50 each for Mich shirts!), hookah at a place called Rendevous and, definitely the burrito place on S. University.

Yes, a lot of the classes were filled up, Intro to Psych and the freshmen English class were both full. Unless, you're in a MLC which has reserved spots in some classes (a psych seminar, and on english section, go HSSP!). I saw some classes with an "enrollment management" thing, which basically saved some seats for people going to later orientations. There were usually only about 1-5 seats though. If you get an early appointment with your advisor on the third day consider yourself lucky since you'll probably get most of the available classes that you want. Also, a lot of the big classes are available like, Chem 130, and math 115, but they're in the morning or have classes on Friday. I wouldn't fret though, you can continue to modify your schedule online over the summer so if you don't get what you want you can probably change it. I did! (Plus, there are literally hundreds of classes to choose from, try something different)

Orientation was fun, a bit boring...The major problem Umich orientation has is that my mom went hungry almost every day. They gave breakfast and lunch one time to parents and then basically let them wander the streets. My mom was so hungry that we had to go find some descent cafe to survive.

Orientation for the most part is boring lol. I agree with Jimmy that the real fun would be in the breaks or after orientation when you have stuff to do one your own...well if you DO something. All the little lectures sections were horribly boring. The first day was a waste of a day and the good part begun basically the afternoon of the second day. During my orientation, everything was available besides the Chem lab 125/126. I got put on the waitlist but I'm #1 on it so hopefully I'll get in. The whole atmosphere of meeting people and doing stuff on your own was exciting, but the actual orientation was pretty boring until the 2nd half of the 2nd day.

The summer troupe performance was really good.

I heard that you don't actually have to stick to the schedule if you don't want to. Is there any sessions that you all would suggest skipping? If so why?

mm when I was there you had to go to all the sessions. I guess you could skip breakfast, lunch or dinner if you wanted and go do something else/eat out...but you have to go to the informational sessions.

Does anyone know if Great Books or any of the econ classes are filled up?

I did a quick check and there are a lot of spots reserved for Honors kids in Great Books and for econ...there are a few sections on friday open and some for MW.

To check yourself, first go here and find the course code, use advanced searc (i.e. MATH 115): <a href="http://www.lsa.umich.edu/cg/%5B/url%5D">http://www.lsa.umich.edu/cg/</a>.</p>

Then go to wolverineaccess, click "Student Business," then "Backpack/Registration," then click "Fall 2005." After that fill in the fields "Subject Code" (i.e. Math) then "Catalog Number" (i.e. 115). And then click the button to search/find.

I'm not sure if this feature is open to you yet, because you might not have fone to orientaton. Try it out.

backpack doesn't work if you haven't gone to orientation yet...but just go to student business, then "class search" which is in the same group listing with backpack

Classic Civ is filled up, so honors kids have to take great books (from now on).

Hold on, I thought Great books is where all the honors kids are at. I really wanted to take Classical Civ

The honors discussion for classical civ only has 30 spots, and I think there are 31 people registered right now, so you will probably have a hard time trying to get in. You might try talking to the prof in the fall to try for an override though.

Does anyone know the chances of getting a Chem Lab 125 if I'm #1 on the waiting list?

ok...i wont be selecting classes until aug. 2, and i know i made a dumb mistake.

so what if I don't get into chem, physics, or calc if they're all filled up?
(i'm a engineering student)

The bigger classes generally will still be available. I also heard(though this may not be true) that they open up more spots as the summer progresses. orientation was fun, though. there were lots of parties and so much to do in ann arbor. i remember the second morning is REALLY boring because you sit through all these sessions about how computers and the library work and stuff. just go up and start talking to people. you'll become familiar with the "hi, where are you from. what's your major" discussion quite fast.

umardarr, i think you have a pretty good chance of getting in. i'm in a similar situation (#1 for a physics 141 lab), and my advisor said the same. you can check your email to see if you get an override this summer, and you can also go on the first day of class to talk to the professor. i believe that people who don't show up on the first day lose their seat in the class.

yea ur right blueman. I found an opening over wolverineaccess just yesterday so I'm saved. The only thing that changed is instead of 8-11am its 2-5pm, but I got a spot, woohoo!
