I dont think SAT is easier than TOEFL. I know many Czech students who had about between 100 and 110 on TOEFL but had a hard time scoring above 600 on the CR of SAT.
And how many americans have CR 690+? I know it’s good but since I was able to do it without any preparation, I’d say that 15-20% of people are better, right?

btw if they do, colleges usually waive 100 TOEFL if you have 600 CR, so I’d say the’re somehow “equal”.

Of course SAT CR is much harder than TOEFL reading. 690 in CR is 94th percentile which means its a very high score, and even higher for an international students, whereas a 105+ TOEFL score is quite easy to get.

It’s nice to hear that you’re from CZ! I lived in Slovakia for ten years!

Well, I guess mods wouldnt like us talking in czech so, where exactly did you live? I dont know Slovakia very well, but I’ve been there several times so maybe I’ve visited the town you lived in…

btw what is seen as a sufficient score for applying to Ivies/top liberal colleges (Amherst, Williams, Middlebury…) for an international students? I know I dont have much of a chance but I’d still like to know it.

On TOEFL, anything above what the school states it requires is absolutely enough; so that’s usually 100+. Because TOEFL doesn’t test aptitude, a higher score doesn’t mean that you’re cleverer or something. After you meet the minimum requirement, a higher score won’t increase admission chances much.

No proszę! A ja z Polski jestem;)) Słowacja i Czechy to piękne kraje!:D

I’m gonna retake SAT upcoming saturday as I have a hard time scoring above 600. It’s really tough, especially sentence completion. I don’t know such sophisticated vocabulary and there’s really little time to read everything carefully. I hope I will bump my scores up!

TOEFL cannot be a deciding factor
let’s face it. Its an awfully easy test and colleges know it.
If the minimum score is 100, the score of 101 and 120 wouldn’t have ANY difference
they only require it to see if you speak enough english
as long as it is above that score don’t fuss about it
its not SAT. TOEFL is ridiculously easy and therefore it is only fair that it does not matter much

I took the IELTS because it seemed much easier than TOEFL and I scored 8.0. Which score is that in TOEFL? I googled it and almost every web page has anopther conversion table :S

I am very confused :S Almost everyone I know has scored high on TOEFL but low on SAT. toefl felt 20 x easier than SAT, yet schools like Yale only require 100?
Everyone I know has got 110+ on there TOEFL, but nobody’s over 2000 on the SAT.
What’s going on? Is it because we’re Swedes? :P

Dunno, I havent done TOEFL (b/c I’m a bit afraid of it - I tried some practice tests and didnt do so well, but I guess I’d be able to get 100) but I tried SAT in October and without any pracice (really, I had only one book-Criticical reading, Barrons - for 3 days before the test) I scored 2120. I neved expected such a score, I was looking to get 600 on CR and I have 690, so I think that if you meet 2 conditions, you will get high score wihtou practice.
You have to read, read, read and sometimes listen to anthing in english - news, serials, movies, whatever.
You gotta have a talent for this kind of tests (I’d call it high intelligence but that’s a matter of opinion). In Czech republic there is similar test called “Learning potential test”. Some people would never get more than 20 points (of 70), but I get 55-60 every time I try it. I’m just very lucky, there’s no study in it.

If you dont meet them, you gotta study A LOT!
Good luck!

@SwedeToUS
TOEFL tests only English while the SAT tests aptitude assuming native-speaker-level English. Speaking a language well and being intelligent are not as much interrelated abilities as people think.

but seriously guys, not even native english speakers use sat words in everday coversations. many americans learn a few months before the actual test. it just shows how good u r at learning by heart in 80% of cases

Hey guys, I took the TOEFL exam last Saturday. Is it possible that I found it extremely EASY? I mean, I scored 690 on the CR section of SAT (just one sitting) but I expected the TOEFL to be a little harder than it was. It lasted about 3 hours 50 minutes for me (instead of 4hrs and 30) and now I am worried I will not score 100+.
