What's so bad about UC Merced?

Okay. There's another discussion going on about UC Riverside. I thought on that note, we should also talk about why people on this board harbor so many negative feelings about UC Merced. I've never been to the campus, but I have not heard anything truly negative about UCM other than heavily biased stereotypes. It's the newest school in the UC system, so maybe it is still ironing out the kinks, but as a UC Davis student, I still see a lot of kinks at UCD.

I've responded to several students on this board who are bewildered by the fact that UCM is the only UC they got into. Is UCM really that bad? Is this an opportunity to pack the school with top-notch students? What do you think?

It’s too new (established 2005), not ranked, not known.

What’s so bad about UC Berkeley?

Everyone that I know at Merced is only there because they didn’t get in other places…I guess it’s just that not as many people know anything about the campus and it hasn’t become established enough yet.

It has very few majors selections.

Any Merced students want to chime in?

It’s not yet accredited.

Its in merced

What nick_scheu said

and its in farmland central.

nothing to do there.

UCM actually has one of the nicest campuses i’ve seen UC wise guys… so lets not all beat it up.

Find me another UC campus thats 45 minutes away from yosemite and a couple hours from SF

@kc20cali

Find me another campus that’s 30 minutes from snowboarding and 45 from surfing, and an hour from LA. UCR is in a great area.

California is a great state with a lot of great areas–just about anywhere you go, there’s something cool within a few hours drive. However, some UCs clearly have better locations than others, and I’d guess that most people would put Merced near the bottom of the pack, along with Riverside.

Keep in mind that people don’t care that there are probably some pretty good professors there (don’t take my word for it, but I heard some UCB professors/admin went there). They just care about the GPA and SAT scores of the entering freshmen class. >>

Michelle Obama was its commencement speaker, which obviously sullied its reputation.

Doctissime, you have it backwards. Merced sullied Mrs. Obama, not the reverse.

^^^I agree.

@kc20cali,

okay, wow. yosemite. lets go party over there and have a social hang out.

actually no. lets go preplan our social outing 1 month prior in SF cuz its a couple of hours drive away.

Okay, guys and gals… Do we want to have a rational discussion? I can see this going downhill very fast.

So far, the only reasonable concerns I have heard about Merced is that it’s a new school, and that it has not been accredited yet. However, the accreditation issue is expected to be resolved this June, and let’s hope so.

I wanted to get your opinions about Merced, but please be respectful. Are students really better off going to Fresno State?

I’d rather go to “a normal CSU” than “the worst UC.” It doesn’t really matter, though.

Nick, you just made a very strong statement, “the worst UC.” I’ll give you the accreditation issue, but deriding a startup school to the level you did seems inappropriate. The UC system is way overcrowded with so many people that it only makes sense to open up a new campus, and they have to put it somewhere.
